I am sending it back in the morning but I will tell you...I was so impressed with their customer service as well as the product before it failed that I have already purchased another and I have no problem having two of the 10 meter cables. We all know that customer service these days is not that great but the fact that this company implicitly trusts me speaks volumes for the quality of their product and staff. I have not one doubt my new cable will be as good as the first was before failure. I will update this as soon as my new one arrives and I use it for a few weeks. For anyone who needs an extra long cable for a high end webcam this is the product for you. Trust me...there are a lot of companies out there with cables advertised to work with webcams and basically their claims are pretty much hogwash...and I know because I have bought them. So kudos to you Cable Matters, you have my business. Now I want to know what else they sell.
Quick notes on POWER:
-- This cable may require a 5 volt, 2 amp power supply, depending on what you're plugging into it. To be safe, you will probably want to purchase a power adapter for it.
-- I purchased the Arrela® External 5V 2A AC/DC Power Supply, 1.35mm x 3.5mm and it worked great.
-- There is a misprint in the specification: The power receptacle at the head of this cable accepts a male, bayonet-style power plug that measures 3.5mm external diameter, 1.35mm internal diameter (3.5*1.35) with a 7mm head length and center+ polarity.
-- If you are going to chain two of these cables together, almost certainly at least one will require power; probably, both.
-- You will likely want to tape the power connection up with electrical tape once connected. I found that my power adapter plugs would come loose from the cable's connector if any sort of tension was on the power adapter's cable.
-- As the picture indicates, the power adapter connector is at the female end of the cable (the far end, where you plug accessories into it, not the end that plugs into your computer). This means wherever the thing is that you're plugging into this cable, you're going to need a power outlet nearby. The cable length on most external USB power supplies is going to be about 3 feet. So have extension cords ready if your power is actually at the male end of the cable.Read more ›
I used this extension with the ~6' USB 3 cable that came with the D800, and there seems to be no speed difference when the extension is added.
BUT, USB 3.0 itself seems to be very finicky about many things, so different combinations produce different results. What I mean is that a given cable may work on one Motherboard port at the highest speed, but on another port on the same motherboard, it may fall back all the way to USB 2.0 speeds, or somewhere in-between. Details at end.
NET: 2 of these 10m active cables BEHAVED DIFFERENTLY, when tested on *EVERY* USB 3.0 port that I have, including 2 Motherboard headers (with adapters). While BOTH could go at the highest speed on some ports, on other ports, one cable would fall back to slower speeds. I tested with & without power, with 3 different adapters for the motherboard headers (one adapter had one bad port which never got above USB 2.0 speeds: TEST TEST TEST!), and 2 different passive extension cables added to both ends - a lot of combinations.
MOST interestingly, the ports on the back of the motherboard were worse than using the Motherboard headers!
CONCLUSION: Works well, but MAKE SURE YOU TEST *YOUR* setup!
Gigabyte Z170 Gaming Motherboard, Windows 10 x64, as of ~Nov 28, 2015 (ie latest drivers, etc. as of that date). Device was a USB 3.0 flash drive (128GB PNY), which tops out on reads at about 160Mbps. So these results are based on a max of 160Mbps.
