Wire rope is cable wire with strands of metal wire twisted in a helix. The cable wire is wrapped around a core, either metal cable wires or another material. The direction of this helix is called the lay, classified as right or left, regular, Lang, or Herringbone. Cable wire larger than 3/8" in diameter is called wire rope cable. Wire rope is generally used for hoisting, winching, and support or suspension.

The most common type of metal cable is steel cable, containing either carbon steel wire or stainless steel wire. Steel cable and steel wire rope have great strength relative to weight and good flexibility. Galvanized steel wire rope provides additional corrosion protection, so galvanized wire rope is often used in marine environments. Wire rope can also be coated for protection against sunlight, temperature, chemicals, or to reduce friction. PVC, Teflon, and nylon are generally used for coated wire rope.
