Doesn't support higher voltage RS232 signals from older PC's

I purchased three of these devices, (cablestogo #26886). They all worked fine with two devices, (a toledo scale and loadcell), but they all failed with a third device, a Kollmorgen stepper motor controller.

If you measure the static transmit (TX) signal level on the #26886, it is about -6.4 volts. But the TX signal level on older RS232 ports (like my circa 2000 Dell desktop) runs about -10 volts. The higher voltage signal appear to disable the #26886. The stepper motor controller that I was connecting to has a static TX signal level about -9.4 volts. If I attempt to use the #26886 to communicate with the device, it HANGS THE WINDOWS DEVICE DRIVER. Windows still runs, but you can't kill the hung driver and the only way to clear it is by rebooting, (yes, I was using the latest Prolific driver, just downloaded 1-5-2011).

So, the device works nicely to communicate with the newer, lower voltage devices, but for older devices, you'll probably need a different solution. You can check your device RS232 voltage level by measuring it with a voltmeter, pin5 (GND) and pin 3 TX on a DE9 connector.

I needed this converter to console into my switches from my laptop, which had a db9 connector. If you use the driver on the cd it comes with to set it up, it works great, if you let your computer try to find its own driver...not so much. So after I set up the cord with the driver, I still was getting no output from the switch on my laptop. Turns out I had to change the port the cable was using to access the switch. The port for each computer I imagine would be different. You might be able to use it as it without problems, but for those of you who know you did everything else right but you're still getting no output on your terminal (putty, super putty, etc) try changing the port that the cable uses to communicate with the terminal (I think I changed mine to 5?) and you should be good to go.

This was purchased to assist a co-worker in resetting his overhead tv projector. It installed and worked great on my Windows 7 laptop using existing Windows drivers. It was able to map the serial port and I just had to load a terminal emulator to send commands as Microsoft decided to do away with Hyperterm that was included on XP but removed on Vista/WIn 7 for some unknown reason. I found a free one to download and it allowed reset of the overhead projector.

Basically works, but....

I did not have an adapter cable to go from the serial end into my other device. The little screw in hex nuts are not designed to unscrew so that I could directly plug in the adapter to my device. Breaking them off also broke off the metal shell around the pins. NOT a good solution, but I could not wait another week or so and go through the expense of buying another adapter cable to adapt this adapter. I only they had use screw in hex nuts, then I would have the option to remove them easily. Luckily duct tape and rubber bands can still hold the adapter to the device.

I bought this adaptor in order to use an old RS-232 cable to update some AV equipment firmware. The adaptor caused the firmware update process to fail causing the AV equipment to "bricked". Luckily for me removing the adaptor and using an older PC with a native RS-232 port resolved the updating issue.

The drivers that come with this product have a large warning on their page warning of cheap knockoff products and they list two "recommended" adapters, neither of which are this one. I would steer clear of this one and pay a bit more to get a product that will work with all devices and applications.

Really really bad design

I was replacing a my old Radio Shack USB to Serial because I can't get them to work on Windows 7. I admit I didn't examine the picture in detail before ordering because in 30 years I can't remember having issues with serial cables. Two serious flaws before I even plug it it.

1) It has a normal DB9 end but it has these two big nuts which are unremovable. Most serial ports are going to expect the cable to have male threads because these female nuts are on the device itself. I ripped them off but that takes off the whole end of the DB9 which basically leaves a bunch of bare pins sticking with no way to secure the cable to the device.

2) This one is obvious. This thing is SHORT. The cable is like maybe 24" which means its very likely you will need a USB extension to use it. I had to dust one off my old USB extension that hadn't been used in years.

The good news is that when I finally got it connected Windows 7 actually recognized it. Problem is that I now have hacked it so much its not really a good long term solution.

Going to consider this a mistake and look for alternatives.
