The "single-link" refers to the throughput; in other terms, to the resolution you can get on your screen. Theoretically, maximum screen resolution at 60 Hz you can get is 2.75 megapixels or this, in more convenient terms:
✔ 16:10 ratio of 2,098 × 1,311
✔ 4:3 ratio of 1,915 × 1,436 pixels
✔ 5:4 ratio of 1,854 × 1,483 pixels
As you can see, the standard 720, 1080i, and even 1080p, the later being 2.1 megapixel or 1920×1080, should be supported.
Your mileage, however, will vary. The maximum resolution you will get will depend on the specs of your equipment that you interconnect with this cable, and how those two pieces of equipment communicate with each other. In other words, you can hope for 1080p and you might even get it; but you might have to settle for 1080i.
One more thing worth noting - this will not carry audio from HDMI. You'll need to route audio signal separately.
The quality of cables that you receive will vary - there are way too many sellers that carry them. However, unless there's a major problem with it - bent pins, extra or missing pins, you cannot tighten the screws on the DVI connector, etc, they all should work just fine. If you have a problem, just return it for a replacement or simply return it and get it from another seller. BTW, don't let them get you on return shipment and restocking fees - it's not going to fly here. If you are asked to do any of that, just tell the seller you'll contact Amazon support to confirm if that is actually in the rules. They'll fold.
There are more expensive cables out there that are supposedly of better quality, but this one should work just as well.
Now, the benefits. I now have a computer hooked up to my TV, and because my graphics card in the computer no longer has to process an Analog signal for output to VGA, I get a free performance boost. Games that I used to have to run at low resolution run at 720p easily now. This is something that I had heard about in the past but never really thought much about until now. What i learned was that Portal 2 in HD actually does look like the trailer videos that Valve released back when it was released.
One quick thing is this. If you're interested in connecting a computer to an HDMI HD TV, keep in mind that for gaming you have to have a TV with low latency, meaning the time between when you move your mouse and time you see it move on the screen. The TV I have (the Vizio) has extremely low latency so much so that I can't tell the difference between moving the mouse and seeing it move onscreen. However, I've played on other TVs where the latency is horrible, where you'll move and it seems to take up to a half a second before there's a reaction onscreen.
But, if you're interested in a low cost cable that will get you hooked up with trouble, this is the one. 5 stars.
This cable is all you need if you want to play high definition content on a display that only has a DVI port. (minus your audio connection) HOWEVER, BE AWARE:
Your display needs to be HDCP compliant. HDCP is a copy protection technology that has become an industry standard for high definition content providers. If your display doesn't support HDCP (some televisions manufactured prior to the HDCP spec's inclusion in the standard don't) you could possibly just get a blank screen.
I bought this cable so I could play my PS3 and XBOX360 on my 22" Widescreen LCD monitor, and maybe watch some TV from my cable box. My monitor has a DVI input on the back. I was in for a surprise on trying to hook these things up, though. My monitor is not HDCP compliant, so my cable box notified me that I had to use another output. I could see the program guide and cable box settings, but I only got a black picture on EVERY CHANNEL. My PS3 just shows a black screen, because apparently you need HDCP just to play games!
On the other hand, my XBOX 360 works flawlessly for gaming (as of 12/24/2008), but supposedly netflix streaming won't work without an HDCP compliant display.
So all in all, this cable does what it's supposed to do. Keep these things in mind if you buy this and you don't get any picture when you hook your devices up.
I'd also like to say thanks for pricing this item right. There is no difference between this cable and a pricey $100 monster cable of the same length (6') in terms of quality. It's all slick marketing that confuses the consumers.
