Hilary McKay, the best writer of child dialogue around at the moment... Glorious novel from a true master of her craft. Independent A triumph of humour, emotion and realism. Daily Mail Caddy's world is saturated with colour, style and romance, with even the most mundane detail given a witty lick of polish. Daily Telegraph Caddy's World excels in portraying not only the thoughts and feelings of four 12-year-old girls, but also those of the Casson parents. The Times Unsentimental with soft-centred charm. Independent on Sunday 'Hilary McKay, the best writer of child dialogue around at the moment, has come up with another winner.' Nicholas Tucker, Independent 'If you haven't read these books, what on earth are you waiting for? You won't find a more endearing, eccentric, maddening and marvellously warm family in any other book, by anyone, ever.' The Ultimate Book Guide REVIEWS FOR THE CASSON FAMILY: 'Witty, warm and humourous ... family reading par excellence.' Carousel 'A crazily fantastic story with loads of mad and hilarious moments.' Independent on Sunday 'It does what we hope JK Rowling would do: it makes everything you wish for come true, including the unlikeliest of outcomes.' Sunday Times 'Hilary McKay's wittily observed portrayals of family life are full of warmth, vitality and irrepressible good humour.' Kate Agnew, The Guardian 'just the sort of crazy family you ache to be a part of.' The Good Book Guide '... we are so fond of this fresh, funny, foolish, wise, real family.' The Horn Book Magazine '... as wild and endearing as ever ... Another charmer for Casson fans.' Booklist '... touching and hiarious. Beautifully crafted descriptive language makes this offering a real gem.' School Library Journal McKay has a genius for domestic comedy. The Sunday Times Hilary McKay's strength lies in her understanding of young people and her ability to evoke them very simply. The Guardian 'Warm, witty and wise, with unfeasibly broad appeal and proven anti-depressive properties, i would give this book to 9-year olds, teenagers and their parents.' Sunday Telegraph '... hugely entertaining story effortlessly recreates a tightly knit world, imbued with a strong sense of belonging - a slice of childhood so multi-layered, touching and real that there's something for every child reader to identify with and savour. Here's a book that truly proves the joys to be had from reading.' Books for Keeps Hard to think of a writer for 10-13s who writes so freshly and wisely about family and friends Sunday Times

"Readers of the series will love this story of the beginning, and those new to the series will be happy getting to know the Cassons."--VOYA

* "In this sixth outing the family sparkles as brightly as ever. . . . With effervescent characters and dialogue, this welcome addition to the Casson saga again strikes a lovely balance between humor and poignancy."--Publishers Weekly, *STAR

"Readers new to the Casson family series will be immediately pulled in . . . In this, book six in the series, McKay proves Tolstoy wrong. Not all happy families are alike."--The Horn Book

* "The Cassons are back. Huzzah! . . . Charming and thoughtful, as well as funny and touching, this is another delightful time with the Cassons and their friends, all of whom are well worth knowing."--School Library Journal, *STARRED

"Fans of the Casson family, rejoice; McKay is returning to the headlong, madcap, and fiercely poignant crew to chronicle the earlier days of the clan. . . . The novel will be open and inviting to new readers as well, and the strong focus on Caddy’s set of friends, who aren’t featured in the other books, puts all readers on an equal footing and provides a school-and-friend story with appeal to followers of Frances O’Roark Dowell and the like."--Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

* "McKay’s writing is like the Cassons themselves: unpredictable, touchingly human, and alternatingly mad fun and tender. New readers will be thrilled to find there are more Casson family upheavals ahead, and old fans will be delighted to learn how it all began."--Booklist, *STAR

Format: Paperback
The Cassons are charming at any stage of life. While this story features Caddy and her friends primarily, I really enjoyed the bits that focused on Saffron and Indigo. In the days before Rose, and before Saffron knew she was adopted, these two prove to be quite the unruly and tenacious pair, often stealing a scene with all sorts of hijinks. I would recommend reading this book last, to new readers, even though it chronologically comes first. Saffy's Angel is the best one to initially introduce readers to the charm and eccentric world of the Cassons, while Caddy's World is a treat for readers have already latched themselves onto this world. It's sprinkled with small references and nods to events that will happen later on during the other books, and readers who already have a place for the Casson in their hearts will love to take an intricate look into how the Casson World began.

McKay is one of my favorite British authors for young adults thanks to a sense of humor which is laugh out loud wonderful. The Casson family has stayed in my memory since my first reading of the series, and I am glad to find the Kindle edition so I can re-read the books when I need cheering up. These books serve to remind us how differently the world is experienced, even by people in the same family. I particularly love that they stick together and support one another in spite their unique outlooks.

Format: Paperback
This is my favorite series for children 8-12 or so. I just finished rereading it, and I wish the stories just kept going on and on forever. There is a sweetness and a completeness to these books: a satisfying feeling that the world makes sense in a crazy, mixed up way, that friendship and love can grow and endure, that people can be both wonderful and flawed, and that a family that loves each other deeply is possible. Artistic creativity is celebrated and exemplified. Courage and love run deeply through the people in these stories. Goodness and kindness win out. As I cultivate gratitude and hope in a complex world, the Casson family and their friends inspire me. I cherish these books.

This is the last book in the series, but chronologically, it comes first. Really, any of the books can be read in any order. They're all wonderful. The series concerns an eccentric, artistic family with four highly individual, talented children.

Caddy is the eldest. She has a cheerful, engaging temperament, and a special affinity for animals. This book concerns the difficult year when her sister Rose is born; and her friends are starting to move in different directions. Caddy would like everything to stay the same, but it can't, and she has to change too.

I've read the entire series to my 10-year-old daughter, and have enjoyed it as much as she has.
