Cadence is the first book in the Ruby Riot series. This series follows the lives of the band members of Ruby Riot while they rise to fame. Cadence intertwines with the Blue Phoenix series also written by Lisa Swallow. Cadence is a story of passion, heartbreak, redemption, and compromise. Lisa Swallow did an amazing job writing each of the characters. They each have their own personalities that seem to come to life outside the book and in your mind.
Cadence is about Jax, the lead guitarist of Ruby Riot, and Tegan, the little sister of Bryn who is the drummer for Blue Phoenix. Tegan is young and adventurous. She wants to travel the world and experience new things, much to the dismay of her older brother, Bryn. When she shows up on tour with Blue Phoenix, Bryn isn’t the only one who is effected. Jax is enjoying his rise to fame. Women, Alcohol, and performing is all he lives for. When he meets Tegan, he sees a challenge, but will he be able to rise to it?
Jax and Tegan are written beautifully. Tegan is my favorite character. She is strong willed and feisty and stands her ground. While she overacts at some points, most of the time she is level headed and tries to compromise. I love that she knows what she wants and she is not willing to let anyone boss her around. She knows she is an adult and is fighting for others to feel the same. Jax is a good character as well. She is cocky and arrogant, but this leaves room for plenty of character development. I think that has a lot going on in his head that is revealed over the story. I love that these two interact. I think their interactions are entertaining, especially in the beginning of the book.
Lisa Swallow is a gifted writer. She has a remarkable way of making the reader feel like they are actually in the characters head and experiencing the same situations as the character. It takes a noteworthy author to be able to make a reader feel heartbreak and love through the characters eyes. This is the reason I continue to come back and read Lisa’s books. I know I will not be disappointed in the writing style. She knows where she wants to go with the story, and she leads readers down the same path.
If you are looking for a book with a lot of heat, then this is your book. Lisa did not skimp on the intimate scenes. With that being said, these scenes happened in a realistic way and felt organic to the story. Not one of these scenes felt like they were placed there just because the book did not contain enough heat. I feel like this also adds to the characters as the whole book is not just about sex. Readers are able to see a physical attraction, but we are lead down the road to exploring the results of when physical and emotional attraction combine.
Overall, I loved this book. I did not find a single aspect of the book I did not like. We were able to see plenty of the characters, while also being introduced to other minor characters. The intertwining of the Ruby Riot and Blue Phoenix series is a good way for readers of the Blue Phoenix series to get updates on their favorite characters. I also feel like it was a good way to introduce the new band, which will all have their own books. I would recommend to anyone who loves a good rock star romance. .=]

“How did you find your way up here?”
“The elevator. I decided the stairs would take too long.” –Bryan and Tegan, Cadence
Better still, these are not today's usual "hey I wrote 20 pages of crap, give me three dollars" books all over the net, nor are they the "to be continued - after you've refinanced your house to finish the 462 little bits I've teased you with along the way". No my dears, this a serious author who does real editing (instead of hoping WordPerfect got everything), and she puts real thought into making a story worthy of your time (and your three dollars). Even better, if you check her webby thingy she gives bunches of her writing stuff away for FREE (ummmmm, WHAT?!?! What is this "free" of which you speak? Look it up ladies, it's spectacular).
Okay, in conclusion, get reading Lisa Swallow''s books. Like now. They are entertaining, funny, sexy, inspired and they got that whole 'free' thing going on, so it don't get much better than that! I seriously doubt Amazon needs any more of your money (Barnes & Noble I'm not so sure about). Now quit reading my drivel and get downloading this fab series!!!
p.s.: (Lisa only please): Lisa, Sweetie, if you ever quit writing rockstar romances, I may have to save up money, buy a plane ticket and come to your house where I will promptly clean, do all your laundry, make a year's worth of meals and sort your mail. I figure it's better than kicking your ass, but if you still refuse keep my books going, I may go to plan B. Thank you Dearest. Toodles!
I loved that this is a rock star series that features a non-American band. I’m not sure if that makes a difference to anyone else, but for me, the author did an excellent job of making the tour/rock star experience a little different from what I’ve become accustomed to.
My biggest issue though, was that it was really, really angsty. The back and forth, the “love me, love me not”, gets a bit much. I could have done without some of the immaturity of Tegan, and would have liked to have seen a little more development in Jax’s character, especially when called out on his reckless behavior. I did like the dual POV, especially Jax’s perspective and the story was easy to lost in. This is my first book by this author and I will definitely be checking out the rest of her titles!

I received an arc for an honest review, but bought the book as it came on sale, as I know I will re read it.
Loved tegans bold, take no carp personality and jax was a dream so glad they got over their issues and got their hea, though I can't imAgine it will all be plain sailing.
Would really like to read nate and smiley rileys story next.
Lisa Swallow weaves a raw and passionate love story into the dirty and sweaty drug and drink fuelled world of a rock tour as a new group makes it's way into the world of rock.
Lisa Swallow may just be a master of the ultimate writing triusm "Show, don't tell." It's easy to tell readers that the hero in your story is incredibly attractive. It's a lot more difficult to actually make them feel that, but I can safely say that I was a certified Jax Lewis fan way before finishing the book. I was also impressed with how well the author pulled off the instant attraction between Jax and Tegan. There's chemistry between the two from the moment they meet, but all the "insta love" tropes associated with romance are avoided, and the development of their relationship and the tension between them is convincing.
Another thing I especially liked about the book was how it explored the theme of young adults trying to discover and create themselves. Both Tegan and Jax are thrown into many completely new situations during the story, and have to decide not only which direction to take with their relationship in, but also which path to take as they develop themselves as people. This was a unique and grounding addition to the typical aspects of a romance novel, and added a lot of appeal to the story.
I'd recommend 'Cadence' to anyone looking for their next romance read, or just for a great book in general! The quality is excellent all the way through and I'm so glad I decided to give it a try.
Cadence follows the story of the deliciously sexy guitarist Jax Lewis and sassy, sexy and fiercely independent Tegan Hughes. Ruby Riot are an up and coming rock band who are supporting the world famous Blue Phoenix boys on their world tour. Tegan just happens to be the little sister of Bryn Hughes - world famous drummer of Blue Phoenix. This is Ruby Riots first tour and Jax really can't afford to mess things up by getting involved with Bryns sister but of course once he meets her, he's captivated by her sass and her killer body.
The instant and obvious sexual tension between Jax and Tegan sets a magnificent tone for this story. They try to fight their growing attraction to each other but eventually give in. There are many bumps along the way (which I won't give away 😜) but I loved that this story is real.
Both characters have flaws that they struggle to work through as the story progresses. As a couple they are thrust into the demanding and intrusive spotlight that fame brings. Cadence also highlights the pitfalls of fame, excess and a world where 'fans' believe they own their celebrity. I loved that despite the fact they both have flaws, their story shows the very real struggle that young people face when they are trying to find their feet and their place in the world. Of course the smoking hot and sexy sexual chemistry obviously helps too!!!! Throw in the added bonus of the often hilarious (and sometimes frustrating) antics of the twins - Will and Nate (also in Ruby Riot and whom you'll meet in later novels, in particular Wills story coming up next in SHUFFLE) and you have a wonderful story full of angst, struggle and love.
Definitely 5 stars for me and a story I'd happily re read!
