La Cage Aux Folles is a terrific musical with an important message of tolerance and love. It is not just for a gay audience--the broader issues of self-worth, of defining oneself rather than being defined by others, of aging and keeping love, and of the strength of love being the greatest strength of all; these are important messages for everyone. Furthermore, the songs are great, the words both amusing and deeply moving, the orchestrations terrific, and the performances for the most part superb.
The MUSICAL takes place in Saint Tropez on the French Riviera (not Miami--that is the Robin Williams movie which came later; and the previous reviewer's criticism that "We Are What We Are" doesn't sound like something that would be done in a Miami nightclub is consequentially absurd. It DOES sound like something that would be done where the musical is actually set.) Unfortunately "We Are What We Are" is cut considerably from Herman's original score--this is surely due to the fact that much of the missing music is intended to accompany dance, which of course we can't see on this CD, but I would have liked to have heard Chantal's and Phaedra's numbers which are part of the song in the Broadway production--but nonetheless is a delight to hear.
Also worthy of note are the very tender and sentimental "Look Over There" and "Song on the Sand" (not "Song OF the Sand", as that same previous reviewer would have!), beautifully sung by Gene Barry. The wittiest is probably "La Cage Aux Folles"--("all week long we're wondering who/left a green Givenchy gown in the loo"!) and "The Best of Times" leaves us with the worthwhile Candide-esque message that we must live the life we have now.
The best, most powerful song is undoubtedly "I Am What I Am", which has become an anthem for the gay and transgendered.

Thiss is one of Jerry Herman's best and most refreshing shows ever, and takes a place in musical history as one of the first "outing" shows. Though a homosexual relationship is the underlying theme throughout the show, the songs beautifull display self-determination and self worth. There are few scores that will ever surpass this at all levels.

What more could you ask of a CD? La Cage aux Folles makes me laugh, and cry. It offers a philosophy for living: "The Best of Times is Now." "So hold this moment fast, live and love as hard as you know how, and make this moment last, for the Best of Times is now, is now, is now." Listen to the tunes again and again - the music is lilting, and the messages bear repeating.

Seventeen years had passed since Jerry Herman's last Broadway smash ("Mame"), and when he returned with a hit, the world really rocked with changes, because this was a musical about a gay couple who were as loving as any other couple had been in musical theater up until that time. The smash hit French movie was ripe for becoming a musical, and the joy of Jerry Herman's love for the subject matter are felt throughout in his beautiful words and music. Gene Barry and George Hearn took chances as straight actors playing gay characters, and their "Song on the Sand" is as profound as "Make Believe" was for "Show Boat's" young lovers almost 60 years before. Along with "Torch Song Trilogy", this opened up a new era on Broadway, and indeed, it was "The Best of Times" even though the gay community was facing the crisis of the era of AIDS. But tragedy brought on triumph, and if the whole world could accept a loving gay couple, anything seemed possible. Two Broadway revivals have won Tony's, and with "The Bird Cage" a successful non-musical version of the same story, it is apparent that the world had opened its heart to what true love was all about. Hearn tossed "I am What I am" out of the Palace Theater like Hank Aaron his record breaking home run, and Barry's plea of "Look Over There" to an ungrateful son is as poignant as ever. There's comedy and drama, romance and longing, and eventually, with "The Best of Times", an anthem of happiness that the gay community still holds close to its heart.

I recently saw the revival of this show on Broadway. With exceptions, the production was average & certainly seemed dated when compared to other shows, but ... Jerry Herman's beautiful score remains truly powerful and contains many theatrical standards!

Best songs include:

We Are What We Are
A Little More Mascara (the "drag theme")
Song On The Sand
La Cage Aux Folles (the "production number")
I Am What I Am (the "showstopper")
The Best Of Times

George Hearn & Gene Barry are excellent in Harvey Fierstein's masterpiece and winner of the 1983 Tony for Best Musical!

Need a little cheering up ... Put the music on ... sit back and listen to the lyrics. Then think about some youngsters putting up with bullies in their families, in their neighborhoods, in their schools ... Take in the music ... listen to the lyrics ... and help those that have difficulty standing up for themselves.

Having just seen La Cage Aux Folles in local theater, I just had to have the cd. This was the best version I could find. It's terrific and I have played it over & over, downloaded it to my MP3 also.
Hard to believe it's been 26 years.........Broadway, it's time for a revival!
