Editorial Reviews

Review

"...a dark and tantalizing show well worth the price of admission."
-- Ray Wallace, Twilight Showcase

"John Everson has to be congratulated for having the courage of his nightmares. Not every writer would be able to convert his most freakish and kinkiest imaginings into neatly plotted narratives as Everson does here...Can you say 'the Stephen King version of American Pie'?"
-- Paul DiFilippo, Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine

"...a wonderfully nasty little collection of twenty-one dark, and often erotic, horror tales. Everson has a clear and sometimes poetic style that lulls and enthralls, drawing you in comfortably only to snap you up."
-- Michele Patterson, Painted Rock

"...an incredible collection that will surely "move" you in ways you never knew possible from a horror story."
-- David Sparks, 1000 Delights

About the Author

John Everson is a staunch advocate for the culinary joys of the jalapeno and an unabashed fan of 1970s European horror cinema. Cage of Bones & Other Deadly Obsessions was his first published book (originally released as a limited edition hardcover in 2000). He is also the Bram Stoker Award-winning author of seven novels, including the erotic horror tour de force of NightWhere and the occult / urban legend mystery of The Pumpkin Man. Other novels include Covenant, Sacrifice, The 13th and the spider-driven Violet Eyes. His tales have been translated into Polish, French and German and optioned for potential film development. His other short story collections include Needles & Sins, Deadly Nightlusts and a 10th anniversary edition of his second collection, Vigilantes of Love, also reissued in 2013.

This book was recently on sale for $0.99 on amazon, and you can still actually get it free at the time of this writing with a Kindle Unlimited subscription. I was told by John that I needed to make sure that I read “Pumpkin Head” before Halloween was up. I did one better and finished the book in just a couple days. I only had one thing to say to him once I got to the 50-60% mark.

What….the…..hell….is wrong with you?

With that I went back to finish what I started. This collection is NOT going to be for everyone, this collection is erotic horror. Some like their horror to scare them with things that go bump in the night, this collection keeps you on the edge of your seat with disturbing tales that involve the most intimate and vulnerable of positions. Don’t feel bad if you get a little turned on by some of these stories, it’s only human nature, and PD Cacek does a great job in the introduction explaining what erotica aims to do. Will you feel a bit dirty? Absolutely, but you’ll continue on anyway.

Within these 20 stories, you have the over-arcing theme of sex, intimacy (not all intimate moments deal with sex), and violence. Like with any collection there are some stand-outs, and there are some misses. The ratio here is FAR skewed to the stand-outs though.

Each story has a little blurb from Everson about the inspiration for each entry and it really does help to set the tone before you get into them. Some are frightening, The Mouth, and some are quite humorous, Murdering the Language.

Everson manages to take the same theme and spin it over and over again in many different ways, but still makes each story feel fresh at the same time so you don’t feel like you’re reading the “same old same old” throughout the collection.

Wow, just when you thought John Everson had reached the limits of his disturbed mind, he proves you wrong. If you take this as an insult to this great work of short stories, you don't belong reading it in the first place! Everson will change the way you look at many things in life and make you realize that there is horror to be found everywhere! If I could give this six stars, I would!!

John Everson is a fine writer. I own several of his books, and I enjoy trying to guess where John is going with each story he tells. Cage of Bones is a story collection, and many of these short tales appeared first in magazines. One story, however, totally blew me away. "Tomorrow" reminded me so much of Ray Bradbury's "The Small Assassin" that I thought surely I had discovered a new Bradbury story. It's not the same story, of course. It's pure Everson. But there is a touch of Bradbury, as well as a touch of Richard Matheson, in "Tomorrow". It's a great story and makes me so happy I bought Cage of Bones for my Kindle. John Everson can really write well. "Tomorrow" scared the pants off me, and I'm still scared half to death.

John Everson is a kindred soul, a horny blood-brother of sorts. We both write sexy horror tales, we both lived in the burbs of Chicago and both wrote music artilces for publications.

CAGE OF BONES features stories about obessions, sex with a witch that puts twin baby dragons in the male part of the body that isn't suppose to have dragons, obessessions, sex with a sex goddess that sucks your essences dry, sex with... you get the idea.

My favorite tale is "Dead Girl On The Side Of The Road." Everson takes the old crossroad "deal with the legend" and creates a new adult version that is even more scary and sexy than the original.

Take a chance and get this bad boy :)

This is a collection of 20 dark erotic horror short stories. The stories vary in length from short to quite long, but all are very very sinister and scary. They focus on the shadier side of human nature.

These were very good stories. While they were billed as 'erotic horror' I wouldn't have said they were that naughty. They were more horrifying and the sex was in context. I applaud the author for being able to take me on a terrifying non stop rollercoaster ride, leaving me breathless and gasping at the end of each story. Great stories but don't read them alone or with the light off.
