So when he does meet handsome Dom Deacon, Kade figures the man's interest is misplaced. But his need to call the man Sir overweighed his initial misgivings and he agreed to meet Deacon for dinner. Even though he had already explained he would never be able to kneel or present himself in the manner expected of a sub, Deacon continued to be persistent.
"I am neither blind nor stupid. I know you cannot do those things. However, there are many other things you can do and ways around much of what you can't."
What followed was a wonderful story of growth and exploration for both Kade and Deacon. Deacon was wonderful in the way he always tried to be attuned to Kade’s needs, while meeting his own of course. BDSM was only a partial element in this Dom/sub story, perhaps because both men were looking for something far more than either one of them had enjoyed before.
The secondary characters in this book were a real delight. Katie, Kade's best friend, Jake and Sam and even the housekeeper were all positive people that developed a place in Kade's new life. This story doesn't contain a lot of angst, which is really lovely, and the BDSM scenes are beautiful to read and light enough to delight any reader, including those who don't typically read books in this genre.
Overall this is a wonderfully sweet story. Kade has a lot of personal problems to work through. I cried when Kade had to cope with a run-in with his ex-boyfriend and then cried tears of joy when...well, I can't share that bit because it would be giving away too much of the story but it involved a stage and a collar. You will have to read it yourself, to see what I mean. Suffice to say the author takes her readers on a gentle rollercoaster of emotions in this book, and I really enjoyed the journey.
Kade was left wheel chair bound after a beating. He lost his life as a sub, and his very reason for living. A disastrous relationship left him thinking he will have no one at all, let alone a Dom. Til he finally gives in and attends a dinner at his friends house. Deacon has spent the last few years without a partner, or a sub. When he meets Kade at his friends dinner party, something changes. He wants Kade like no other, but can Kade let him the man he needs, let him be his Dom, regardless of his disability?
I have not ever read a book where the main character is wheelchair bound. Amputees, yes, chair bound, no. And I really really enjoyed this!!
I loved that Deacon saw the man Kade, before all else. I loved that Deacon made it quite clear that the chair is not an issue for Kade to sub, its a perfectly good way to make Deacon's brain think, and adapt. THAT is what impressed me most about Deacon, his brain adapted almost everything, immediately.
Kade is, emotionally, at least, broken. He constantly belittles himself, his abilities, or lack there of, but he can't see what Deacon does. What Dom would want a sub who cannot kneel at his feet? This is what upset me about Kade the most, his negativity. BUT I was also impressed with his coming around to Deacon's way of thinking, that all things are do-able, with a little thinking and a little adjustment.
What I felt was lacking, though, was history. We get some of Kade's history, his before and after the attack, but the attack is merely told to you. I didn't get into Kade's head, as much as I should have done for such a life changing event. His relationship after, with Gary also leaves me feeling I need more. We don't get much of Deacon's history, either. Some, but not enough for me.
A very well written, well delivered tale, that leaves me wanting to read more from Ms O'Riley.
