The except for the author's trilogy at the end of the book looks even better and I'm off to buy it now. I predict that this will be another indie author (at least I think he's indie since Black Moons Publishing has only published his books) that will be snapped up by a major publisher in the near future - and I just love spotting them early. It's one of the best reasons to own a kindle.
Basically a woman's husband dies leaving her with two kids. She takes them to a cageless zoo where you can get right up close and personal with the "animals". The something happens and the family finds themselves stuck in the middle of this zoo full of dangerous animals that are running amok. The death of the husband actually does play an important role in the story but I don't want to give too much away.
I gave this story three stars because it is an interesting enough story line, but I just didn't feel sucked in like I need to be in order to give it a four or a five. Perhaps in part that was because I knew this story was very short and didn't want to get to invested in a story that wasn't going to go very far. Considering it was free though and it was short I liked it enough that I would recommend it to someone who just had a little extra time on their hands

While there, Melandre and the children, Andrake and his sister, Natalye, have the occasion to speak to a business associate of Phillippe's, the deceased husband and father. Melandre is very upset by the way her husband's research files have been handled after his death. By the time this story comes to its very exciting ending, Melandre will have found her own voice and courage and will be able to face just about any situation with confidence. They just have to watch out for those Hywalkalars and the Chthulubeasts. After all, it is a cageless zoo.
This is a very captivating story because there is a lot of action and frightful scenes in it. The character of Melandre is so likeable as she gets stronger and the children are, too, especially when they show how very intelligent they really are. This family loves each other very much and their concern for others, sometimes at the risk of their own lives, is a good thing to see. I found this very entertaining and very well-written, and the author is a new one for me. There isn't a dull moment, because the excitement mounts from the very beginning and doesn't let up until the final sentence.
There is also an excerpt from the author's Book One of the GAMERS Trilogy and that proved to be quite captivating and creative, too. I wouldn't mind reading the books. Just about anyone should enjoy The Cageless Zoo. Thomas K. Carpenter is an author to keep your eye on.
