The author does a good job of laying out an outline of a familiar plot of many science fiction titles – mankind comes up with some new technology, an alien race has been silently observing and doesn’t want mankind to leave their galaxy, and a war is started with man at impossible odds. Without having a spoiler, as an adult who has read a lot of good science fiction the believability factor isn’t there; rather than stopping and deleting it from my Kindle I continued to read it more as a censor for my junior high child: he liked it.
While the book is being marketed to adults, I think the author is missing his true audience of the middle school / junior high boy. If you’re an adult who loves science fiction, I would give this one a pass.
Ralph L. Angelo Jr. definitely knows his craft very well.
And more importantly, Mr. Angelo is able to take many of the popular culture references about space travel from the pulps, comic books, television, and films, and to distill them into a wonderful, and dare I say, likely scenario concerning the human species and the next great race to space.
His main protagonists are reminiscent of the Fantastic Four, Challengers of the Unknown, The Robinsons (LOST IN SPACE), Doc Savage, his Amazing Five (Monk, Ham, Renny, Long Tom, and Littlejohn), and his adept cousin, Pat Savage, and a host of other similar characters.
However, despite the similarities, the characters in THE CAGLIOSTO CHRONICLES are pretty much fleshed out and have more depth to them than meets the eye.
The premise of the novel is also fascinating because I have wondered if it would be wise to go out into the black (FIREFLY reference, I couldn't help it) and what ramifications and consequences of such a venture will do to the species as a whole. Could there be a reason why space travel has somewhat stalled for the U.S. for the last twenty seven years following the tragic Challenger explosion in early 1986, other than the obvious one just mentioned? Where has the push to branch out, explore, and colonize other worlds gone? Could there be a more sinister reason for the delay?
THE CAGLIOSTRO CHRONICLES delves into these series of questions and reveal that a certain alien species is aware of our presence, and all that we are. The good stuff, and the bad. And they refuse to have us continue like we are in the vast cosmos. However, the need to keep humans earthbound causes certain elements in the U.S. government to assign a special mission to the lead protagonist in this novel named Mark Johnson who is pretty much the latter 21st century's version of Reed Richards and Tony Stark combined into a formidable polymath. He is aided by his girlfriend, Ariel O'Conner(think a young Sue Storm of the Fantastic Four and Jean Grey of the X-Men combined into a drop dead gorgeous and deadly telepath) and a team of scientists, technicians, and experts who he hired himself and who he also trust implicitly with the most sensitive of tasks. These guys are in a race against time. Thankfully, they have the Cagliostro, the first Faster-Than-Light (FTL) vessel created on Earth at their disposal. Long story short, the team set course for the outer regions of space to find the extraterrestrial presence responsible for stymieing progress in human space exploration. The encounter that follows causes the Earth to be in grave danger, and it is up to Johnson and his crew to neutralize the threat.
The pacing of this book is wonderful, and the story itself felt like it could easily have been a premise for a television or film series.
It's that good.
Don't believe me? Pick a copy!
I haven't had this much fun reading a pulp sci-fi space adventure in a very long time.
I might just re-read the novel for the hell of it. I love it that much.
It kept my interest from the first sentence. Very few books do that for me these days. And those that do, I have to talk about.
With THE CAGLIOSTRO CHRONICLES, there is so much potential for more stories in the near future.
I hope that there will be several sequels in the works. Johnson and his crew are an intriguing bunch.
I look forward to reading more of their adventures.
So pick up a copy, or download it to your Kindle, ASAP! I doubt that you will be disappointed. I know I'm not.
