This CD offers original recordings from the early 20th century. The quality of the recordings is very good (considering their age). The songs are some of the best of the early twentieth century: At a Georgia Camp Meeting; Maple Leaf Rag; The Memphis Blues; and, most importantly, the first recording of the St. Louis Blues by Prince's Band, a recording that can be found almost nowhere else on CD.

The artists including Sousa's Band, Arthur Pryor's Band and Prince's Band were the leading bands of their time. This CD is highly recommended to those who want to hear recordings made in the the early 20th century.

Of course, the Archeophone Phonographic Yearbooks are unsurpassed for early music recordings, but this CD comes close.

I am no teacher, but I have studied, avidly listened to, and enthusiastically performed many types of music since I was little, and I like this compilation. For the casual listener, this is a great album to fill in the gaps of one's familiarity with American Popular Music around the turn of the 20th century. It is not comprehensive, or scholarly, and the title is a bit misleading I feel (Military? How? Because John Phillips Sousa, who was known for his military marches, was affiliated with many of the pieces here??? And the cultural references can be mentioned in the same breath? Not quite sure why it's considered military...please correct me if you know more than I do about this description, anyone...), but all in all it's an enjoyable listen. It is nice to get another snippet of the feel of the time, and gratifying to know more about where and when melodies that Merry - Go - Rounds, and WWII news reels, for example, sometimes played (just two associative examples of my own observation, they are not listed as such on the album) come from.
*The only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is because I like liner notes, etc, and with MP3 downloads, you don't get that (a good opportunity for development, all you entrepreneurs!!!! Make it so!!!!)*

Yes, it's radio's own Dr. Demanto, but thankfully, he's not making fun of this great old stuff, just presenting these great transcriptions of the original historic recordings, with impressive liner notes.

I ordered and received this promptly. I was actually looking for a particular song that my husband wanted for our old Victrola player, and it is included in the collection of songs on this CD. I was not only VERY pleasantly surprised by the quality of this CD, but thrilled to hear that all of the songs sounded like they had been recorded from a Victrola player!! We got all the great sounds without having to get up and change the record after every song! LOVED THIS PURCHASE!!

This is a very poor put together. Not worthy of consideration. Doing a disservice to ragtime music.
