This is the second revision of my original review of the CalDigit USB-C Docking Station.
After having some extremely bad problems with this product, I ultimately changed my 5-star review to a 1-star.
CalDigit took notice. They offered me the opportunity to try this product again with updated firmware.
I have been using this Docking Station for the past few days with the new firmware intact. All the negative issues I had been experiencing with this docking station, under the former firmware, have now disappeared.
I am very happy to report that CalDigit has fixed the issues being reported in many unfavorable Amazon reviews. There are no more hardware related freezes, flickers or otherwise on my 2016 15" MacBook Pro with Touchbar.
The only issue that I do experience, from time to time, is an initial freeze of the mouse when first booting up. However, the freeze-up only happens on seldom occasions and it's less than a second of interruption. I am not bothered enough by it to reduce the amount of stars I have given this product.
It is worth reading this entire review from bottom-up. It really maps out the story of receiving a docking station I fell in love with which met my needs to connecting an assortment of peripherals to my MacBook Pro. The review (my first revision) then turns to total despair as I begin dealing with multiple hardware and software issues that (as confirmed in this second revision) were quickly solved through a firmware revision issued by CalDigit.
So, right here and right now, I finally can place a 5-star stamp on this product. Their latest firmware absolutely resolves many of the issues being reported by less favorable Amazon reviews. If you have any issues with this docking station, ,the company will reach out to you as they did to me. Furthermore, you have Amazon's return policy in your favor as well.
My original 1-star review for this product remains intact below. Please be advised, that review is no longer valid. All issues have been resolved with the new firmware update. You can buy this docking station with confidence that it will work well with your laptop device.
My original 5-star review for this product remains intact below.
However, after 30 days of use, I am packing this up and returning it to Amazon. I am also providing a stern warning to anyone contemplating buying this hub for their new 2016 MacBook Pro.
While it is true the hub works as advertised, there are adverse effects this hub has on the MacBook itself. I didn't realize that it was the hub causing a multitude of problems until I read other Amazon reviews for this product.
Firstly, it causes the laptop to often freeze or lag. The mouse begins to slur in response. At first, I couldn't understand why these actions were happening on a brand-new, memory-loaded i7 laptop.
Then there were the array of Internet disconnections that occurred the moment I put the computer down. I didn't even have to put the laptop to sleep. The ethernet connection just ceased to operate, that is, until I disconnected then reconnected the USB hub cable.
There is just something about this hub that wreaks havoc on the laptop. It's like my MacBook Pro is possessed. In order to have the demon excised, I feel I must send this product back to Amazon.
Do yourself a favor and use a dongle instead. Yeah, they are a pain-in-the-neck to use, but you won't have the problems I have been experiencing with this device.
Boy, did I spend quite a bit of time researching USB-C docking stations. Days, to be exact. I was pondering over offerings from OWC and Plugable. Caldigit rose to the very top based on reputation of the company (which is excellent) and overall Amazon reviews.
Over the past few months I bought a 2016 MacBook. It was my first foray into USB-C connections. While I am not a huge fan of USB-C, I do understand that it is the future of portable laptops.
For the past months I have dealing with dongles that hang from the side port of my MacBook. These dongles are weighed down by ethernet connections, USB-C adapters and flash drives. I needed to move away from having all these things hanging to the side of my MacBook and go with a unified docking station.
This CalDigit USB-C Docking Station is almost perfect. It has a very small footprint that allows me to set it on a small shelf seated behind my sitting chair and then plug all my necessary devices into it. I can plug my ethernet connection. I can plug my flash drive. While this docking station is missing a USB card card reader (which is a huge negligence), I can fortunately still use a USB-A SD adapter to connect a micro SD card to access my photos.
The beauty of this device is that everything gets plugged into the docking station and a single USB-C/Thunderbolt cable gets plugged into my laptop.
I have finally ditched all the extra weight and allowed this docking station to handle all the extras instead.
There is even a microphone input and headphone output on the front of the docking station, which will be great if I want to add narrative to any movies I put together in Final Cut Pro.
The docking station has a very well built aluminum chassis and it doesn't run hot. It has outputs for multiple displays (though this was not a reason for buying this dock). It has enough power to charge my MacBook while it is being used.
Installation is very easy. There is a quick-start guide inside the box. Please be aware that you will need to download drivers specific to your device (Mac or Windows) before you can use this docking station. Download URL's are included in the quick-start guide.
It's perfect for what I need TODAY. However, not for TOMORROW....
I am kicking myself in the rear for buying this dock, knowing I will be spending $150 or more in a few short months when Caldigit releases a better one.
You see, it's okay for today's MacBook of MacBook Pro. However, I just ordered the new 2016 15" MacBook Pro which requires at least 85 Watts of power. This docking station only offers 60 Watts. So, as of next month, my $150 Caldigit docking station will no longer be able to charge my new MacBook Pro while it is in use. If it can, it won't support fast charging nor will the charging be consistent.
I am telling you this because I want to be certain everyone understands the power limitations of this device for the next wave of technology. If rumors are true and Caldigit is on the cusp of releasing an upgraded dock with more power, then that is something that should be sought out. However, I have already spent $150 for a product that is already outdated.
All that being said, I give this docking station 5 stars for what it offers TODAY. I have done a considerable amount of research, and really, there may be docking stations that offer more inputs (such as an SD card reader), but none that have the reputation of Caldigit. Please do your own research of Amazon reviews and see how the other vendors I have mentioned above are getting very bad reviews on their docking stations.
I am recommending this highly based on the performance I have received thus far. It works beautifully. It has given my laptop a sense of freedom that I could not have with hanging dongles. Free yourself!
The device it self has a fantastic build quality, and seems like it will last a long time. That said there are some concerns I have in regards to its compatibility with the new MacBooks.
*As noted earlier, it works with the MBPTD but it has a few issues. The main issue for me is that both HDMI and DisplayPort (1.2) Outputs 4K and 2K, but only at 30HZ. I seem to be unable to increase the output to the advertised 60HZ as stated in the details above: "...2K QHD 2560x1600 @ 30Hz & 60Hz..." I haven't yet found a way to fix this issue so I am surviving with the 30HZ output.
The other issue I found was in regards to audio. It seems that audio isn't as fully powered as I expected which means that when audio is routed through the device it becomes much quieter.
I look forward to having both of these issues resolved with patches in the future and will happily give a 5-star review at that time.
UPDATE 1 (review now 2/5 rather than 4/5):
I wanted to send out an update with this review. After further use, I continue to have issues with my display. It appears that now when I connect it, my MacBook will freeze. Further more, if I manage to clear that issue up (which I can do about 20% of the time by restarting and re-connecting the dock, the monitor, and my computer) I am now finding that the dock fails to power the MacBook fully. In fact I just looked up and noticed that my battery has somehow slipped from 100% to 14%. It appears it simply does not provide the power necessary to power Ethernet, Monitor, and Charge the computer. Given this new information, I will be returning this item as it is not functioning as it was supposed to. I do not believe this is an issue with this single device though.
I hope this device will be updated shortly for the new MacBooks, when it is, I will happily purchase the updated version!

I even tried their "special firmware", I was never able to solve the issue. I think it's more of a compatibility issue than the product being defective but I had no way to tell if it would work well or not before buying it. After doing a lot of searches I found other people with the same monitor having the same issue with this dock.
Bottom line it may work well without any issues with your hardware but if you have a Led Cinema Display stay away from it, don't even waste your time thinking there's a chance you won't have problems, it just doesn't work with this monitor.
On the other hand, if you buy a belkin express dock thunderbolt 3, everything works with the Led Cinema Display. I've tested the isight camera in every app, the sound, brightness controls, usb ports etc. Perfect.
Also, the customer support from Caldigit wasn't the best... I've seen worst but it took them too long to respond to my emails. They didn't even responded to the last one I sent like over two weeks ago, what a joke.
I then showed the Apple full diagnostics showing the error code from the device .
The device kept restarting the computer.
Took my broken computer to apple after it got worse.
I think by this I proved it was faulty.
Even with a full report from Apple they still said not enough Information.
They still did not want to refund .
All this happened in the first 30days .
Don’t buy from these guys because they don’t care about selling defective products and are almost impossible to return .
You have been warned .
BTW I have full proof from myself and from Apple technician to show it was faulty.
Still they did not help.
