Other text books tend to be heavy with problems where the answers have a lot to do with remembering tricks from earlier math courses.
Swokowski focuses on Calculus. If you really want to understand the subject, as opposed to rote problem solving, this is the book.
Most math books lack clear explanations and surprisingly enough this one is no exception. Many authors can be worse than others, but most of the time they don't give clear-cut explanations because essentially a mathematics text is meant to be written by the reader!
The author writes the book of course, but the book has a lot more problems for the reader to solve than there are explanations in the book. I have never seen a mathematics or any other scientific text that gives clear explanations and this is somewhat unfortunate! Math and science are meant to be understood intuitively by the readers, if not, then they shouldn't pursue mathematics seriously. Most math texts are very difficult for average people and Calculus by Swokowski is no exception! Yet this book is very well arranged and covers most of the material very well. It is mostly worthwhile studying this book in order to gain excellent knowledge of elementary calculus.
