This book is rather less like a 'handbook', and more like an encyclopedia. Which in no way is a bad thing! The California Master Gardener Handbook has an amazing amount of information, and is written in a style that is very easy to understand. Everything from the way plants grow to specific ways of propagating and caring for them to the best plants for certain areas and purposes to diagnosing plant diseases. Excellent for both the beginner and the expert.

Even though I purchased this book for a class, I will be keeping this book in my collection, as it is one of those books that can always be useful, no matter what the situation.

As of December 2012, UC Davis is no longer offering this book.

In Master Gardener training classes, we are told that a new, updated edition is coming soon, probably in Spring 2013. Explanation is that the material in this edition, in particular information covering poisons and pesticides, is too outdated to be useful.

I have a horticulture degree, but it is quite old. Now, in retirement I would like to catch up, have a wonderful garden, and help others to extend their growing season here where it is cold eight months a year and even snows! This book is easily understood and addresses most of the problems that the home gardener will face. I heartily endorse this publication.

First, take an insular bureaucracy (University of California Davis), next mandate a comprehensive text that's dumbed down to the semi-literate level(CMGHB), then assign a group of disinterested academics to the task of writing, and this is what you get. Honestly, it gives me no pleasure slamming CMGHB, it's just that bad. The information it contains is outdated, incomplete, and not useful. This a reference book that NEVER has the answer you need. Variety information? Twenty five years out of date. Pest Info? Full of useless facts with no viable techniques. If there's any concise, usable material, it's too buried in the 700 pages to find. The New Western Garden Book: The Ultimate Gardening Guide (Sunset Western Garden Book) puts CMGHB to shame.

Update 4-11. The new Grow Fruit by DK publishing resets the bar for fruit books, while The Vegetable Gardener's Bible, 2nd Edition has been the best vegetable growing resource for awhile.

If you're looking for "Gardening for Dummies", this ain't it. (Search again - Amazon has that one, too.)

This is an encyclopedia of gardening info, all about gardening in California. (ergo, useless in New Jersey)

When all my other garding books let me down, and Google replies to whatever I'm searching for by saying "Huh?!?!", this book (sometimes) has the answer.

This is an excellent resource book written by experts in all of the areas connected with gardening and agriculture. It is in a form that is easily accessible as to the type of information needed at any given time as well as being the basic text for the California Master Gardener course.

I bought this as a gift for my daughter, who lives in the central valley, but she won't get it until I finish reading it!

While written for Californians, there is a wealth of basic botanical information the will prove valuable to gardeners all over...well, maybe in neighboring states. As a Tucson gardener, I found loads of valuable information on all aspects of horticulture.
