At-Tawhid

Demography is destiny. In the 22nd century European deathbed demographics have turned the continent over to the more fertile Moslems. Atheism in Europe has been exterminated. Homosexuals are hanged, stoned or crucified. Such Christians as remain are relegated to dhimmitude, a form of second class citizenship. They are denied arms, denied civil rights, denied a voice, and specially taxed via the Koranic yizya. Their sons are taken as conscripted soldiers while their daughters are subject to the depredations of the continent's new masters.

In that world, Petra, a German girl sold into prostitution as a slave at the age of nine to pay her family's yizya, dreams of escape. Unlike most girls of the day, Petra can read. And in her only real possession, her grandmother's diary, a diary detailing the fall of European civilization, Petra has learned of a magic place across the sea: America.

About the Author

In 1974, at age seventeen, Tom Kratman became a political refugee and defector from the PRM (People’s Republic of Massachusetts) by virtue of joining the Regular Army. He stayed a Regular Army infantryman most of his adult life, returning to Massachusetts as an unofficial dissident while attending Boston College after his first hitch. Back in the Army, he managed to do just about everything there was to do at one time or another. After the Gulf War, with the bottom dropping completely out of the anti-communist market, Tom decided to become a lawyer. Every now and again, when the frustrations of legal life and having to deal with other lawyers got to be too much, Tom would rejoin the Army (or a somewhat similar group, say) for fun and frolic in other climes. His family, muttering darkly, put up with this for years. He no longer practices law, instead writing full-time for Baen. His novels for Baen include A State of Disobedience, Caliphate, and the series consisting of A Desert Called Peace, Carnifex, The Lotus Eaters, The Amazon Legion, Come and Take Them, The Rods and the Axe, and A Pillar of Fire by Night. With John Ringo, he has written the novels Watch on the Rhine, Yellow Eyes, and The Tuloriad. Also for Baen, he has written the first three volumes of the modern-day military fiction series Countdown.

Caliphate tells the story of two people from opposite sides of an all too believable future earth. Petra is a poor Christian girl growing up in what was once Germany, now the heart of an Islamic confederation, successor to the EU, called the Caliphate. John Hamilton is a recent graduate of West Point dispatched to the front lines of a low intensity war being waged by America against Islamic fascism (or more correctly, just Islam now). The main story spans the years 2103 through 2113. Most of the first half of the book is spent developing the characters. I won't spoil the story, but both endure terrible hardships and by the time they meet in the final act we care deeply about them. The second half of the book details a black ops operation inside the Caliphate, culminating in a furiously action packed finale. From about page 200 on it's pretty hard to put the book down.

The narrative style is perfect. We are constantly switching between the two characters. The alternating narratives keep our attention even in the first-half slow parts. Each chapter ends with a brief entry from the diary of Petra's great grandmother (she's sort of a 3rd main character with a plot thread all her own). From these we gradually learn of the events that led to future earth. Around the middle of the book there is also a really well done 10 page excerpt from a "history" text that chronicles key events.

Caliphate is refreshingly politically incorrect. Kratman calls a spade a spade, and while he certainly paints a negative picture of Islam, he paints a possibly worse picture of an American reaction to the threat. The villain of the book is Oppression. The overriding theme is that freedom isn't free and if not defended will be taken.

A word of warning: the book contains graphic and disturbing sexual content. I accept that some of it was necessary for the effectiveness of the story, but at a certain point it became clear that much was simply gratuitous. If that's your idea of entertainment then disregard the warning. It's not mine and I thought I'd be subtracting stars for it. By the time I turned the last page though I was so impacted I gave it 5 stars anyway.

You probably have already read the premise of the book from other reviewers, so I'll skip that and get to what I liked and did not like about the book.
Okay, Pros:1) Most of the characters were interesting and their hardships were certainly described well. Kratman writes very movingly about the horrors of slavery and rape, and for that he should be applauded. The reader truly does feel as if these atrocities are or can happen to him/her or his/her dear kin.
2)While some did not like the Interludes from the past, they were my favourite part of the book. I enjoyed seeing the progression of Gabi from being an antiAmerican bigot and being willing to excuse almost anything from the Muslim extremists in the name of Tolerance to becoming someone who, over the course of the story has lost everything she holds dear to the fanactics and becoming someone who wishes for their extermination (with just cause, as the reader will see).
    3) Kratman does paint a vivid (and highly likely) picture of exactly how Europe is being and most likely will be continued to be outbred by the Muslims and how in a generation or two they (the ethnic Europeans) will be a minority in their own lands. This is a wake up call that sadly will not be heard by those who need it most.
    Cons:
    1) Too much graphic sex. No, I'm not a prude, but I did think that the author could had made his point just as well and with a bit more class without showing his protaganist getting laid every other page. We are supposed to root for this character and he is shown taking advantage of oppressed women just as much as the Muslim bad guys. Some of the scenes actually made me roll my eyes; they were as cheesy as an old James Bond flick. Apparently this guy, even though he is described to be anything but attractive, has women throwing themselves at him left and right. Okayyy.
    2) Too preachy. Just about all of the Muslims are bad (even those who seem kind do some really evil things) while the Christians are all noble and can do no wrong, even when they're committing genocide. Anyone who thinks that life under Christian theocracy would be any better than this needs to read up on the Spanish Inquisition. The choice isn't between which type of theocracy one should live under, but about fighting ALL theocracies (which, it should be said, that the "hero's" favourite sexual act would be defined as sodomy under Catholic law and punished as such in a Catholic state. Just saying).
    3) Canadians (which I was natively born) and Europeans can do no right in this book. They are demonized for not wanting to have more children than they desire or can afford (I don't want to get into a breeding contest with people who consider women to be nothing more than walking uteruses, do you? I honestly don't think that we could win), for enjoying time off rather than working nonstop for possessions, and for enjoying some Socialist benefits. Hey, when your grandparents can no longer receive a Social Security check every month, make sure to thank them for not being supported by a "welfare state".
In closing, this is a good book but one that needs improvement. The truly scary part of the book is in the afterword where the author offers his tips (one of which is mandatory military service. Sorry, as a parent I don't think that my children should have to go fight in any war that they don't choose to enlist for) and his predictions for the future. To this, I ask: would life under the CHRISTIAN Taliban be any better? The goal, ladies and gentlemen, is not to decide which type of theocracy under which one should live, but to resist ALL of them. I know that my review will be regarded as the rant of a Canadian liberal (actually I'm more of a moderate) and an agnostic Jewish one at that, but please read with a grain of salt and keep an open mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prophetic and depressingly accurate view of our not too distant future
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 16, 2016
Prophetic and depressingly accurate view of our not too distant future in Europe (unless Europe wakes up to the realisation that it is being colonized by a hostile force....).
Well written, accurate in its depiction of a very sick culture, and a scathing condemnation of a woolly-headed population whose "leaders" will allow them and their culture to be destroyed by invasion disguised as immigration.
For those who cry "racist" - No. This book is about a culture and a way of life utterly foreign and hostile to the civilised west. A culture and way of life which considers it right to murder anyone who disagrees with them.
    Read it and be warned.....

3.0 out of 5 stars Chilling Dystopian Novel
Reviewed in Italy on May 10, 2013
Not a great book, but still an interesting read. The plot was decent, even if it is predictable. The characters were very good, fleshed out so that you really get a feel for them. I do think that some of the more explicit sexual scenes were unnecessary, did not add any thing to the story, while trying to portray the muslims as more evil than the westerners. Also the SF parts of the novel were not explained in a way that the reader could understand.

I would recommend this book to anybody that enjoys reading dystoian, fantasy or thrillers.

Afterword, do read this as it is good for a laugh. Mr. Kratman seems to think he is in a position to be giving advice to Europeans. In fact he has a list of 10 things we should do to save ourselves from this terrible fate. I won't bore you with the list, except to say that the U.S. is doing a good many of the same things that Mr. Kratman accuses the Europeans of!

He also mentions Mark Steyn's position, ( I suppose he is referring to his book "America Alone: The End of the World as We Know It") about the decline of Europe. Yet he fails to mention Mark Steyn's other book " After America: Get Ready for Armageddon" where this time Steyn's position is the downfall of the U.S. Only faster and a lot less pleasant than Europe's.

Mr.Kratman also mentions some legal cases in Europe where the judges took the side of the Muslims even to the point of citing the Koran.

In Pennsylvania at a Parade of Atheists of Central Pennsylvania. a man was attacked by a Muslim for wearing a costume of a Zombie Muhammad. Even though the man admitted to attacking the other man, this did not stop the judge from throwing the case out of court, an stating the following:

"In fact I have a copy of the Koran here and I challenge you sir to show me where it says in the Koran that Mohammad arose and walked among the dead. I think you misinterpreted things. Before you start mocking someone else's religion you may want to find out a little bit more about it. It makes you look like a doofus... In many Arabic speaking countries something like this is definitely against the law there. In their society in fact it can be punishable by death and it frequently is in their society."

I think Mr. Kratman would be better off offering his advice to his fellow Americans, after all according to his own afterword it s too late for us!

I was pleased to see he dedicated his book to Oriana Fallaci among others, one of my favorite authors. RIP Oriana

5.0 out of 5 stars Caliphate, dangerous hate!
Reviewed in Canada on September 21, 2016
Superb tale, very defly written. I enjoy all of Tom's tales, due to the way the mores of the cultures interact with the morals of the folk in the stories. Thought-provoking, as well. I re-read Glubb Pasha's books, on the Middle East, after finishing Caliphate, to refresh my memory about the origins of the Muslims, and about the workings-out of their religion. Another book, from WWII, was also re-read, and it was Poppski's Private Army (for western Egypt, and Libyia, and the folk living there).
