Pointstreaks and Strike Packages
Killstreaks, benefits and abilities awarded for stringing together multiple kills, have been transformed into Pointstreaks, creating a system that rewards players both for landing kills and completing objectives. These rewards have been broken up into three different categories, known as Strike Packages:
- Assault - Pointstreaks within this package chain together and deal direct damage. It includes classics like the Predator Missile and Attack Helicopter. Your streak resets on death.
- Support - Pointstreaks within this package do not chain, focusing instead on surveillance and disruption. Your streak does not reset on death meaning they will respawn with you.
- Specialist - Pointstreaks within this package are designed for advanced players. Rewards come in the form of additional perks for optimal performance. These perks last until death.
Weapon Proficiencies
Just like your player, weapons now rank up, unlocking additional attachments, reticules, camos and the new proficiency category. Weapon Proficiencies not only allow you to get better with weapons, they also allow you customize your weapons with helpful attributes such as "Kick" for reduced recoil, "Impact" for deeper penetration through hard surfaces and much more. Many proficiencies are specific to their weapons class. And all are geared towards enhancing a certain play style and can allow for efficient use of your favorite weapons in maps and game modes in which they might not otherwise be the best choice.
Modes and Match Customization
Along with the return of the fan favorites Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 introduces several new game modes. Collect dog tags from killed players, including those on your squad while you prevent the opposing squad from taking yours in Kill Confirmed mode. In Team Defender mode, grab the flag and protect the flag carrier for as long as you can to increase your team's score. In addition players will enjoy user generated match mode functionality which allows you to configure any mode how you want it and then share these over the Call of Duty: Elite online service.
2-player Co-op Special Ops Survival Mode
Special Ops cooperative action returns with a bevy of additions, including 16 new objective-based missions and the all-new Survival Mode. Team up online, locally, or play solo and face endless waves of attacking enemies throughout every multiplayer map. Purchase and customize your weapons, air support, equipment and abilities to stand up against increasingly difficult forces and land a spot on the leaderboards. Earn experience and rank up with the newly implemented progression system. The higher the rank, the more weapons, air support, and gear armories you will have available to customize so you can change your tactics on the fly. In addition to the action packed battle for freedom, the cooperative Survival Mode also serves as an effective training tool for competitive multiplayer action.
Call of Duty: Elite
Call of Duty: Elite is an online multiplayer oriented service launched simultaneously with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. The service offers both free and subscription based levels of access and is dedicated to the game franchise, featuring lifetime statistics across multiple games, social-networking options, competitions, a mobile app, Facebook integration and more.

Multiplayer
First the PROs:
1. Graphics moderately improved over prior versions particularly in attention to detail and apparent rendering speed.
2. Gameplay is very smooth--this has obviously been a design goal of the IW CoD team from the beginning and it shows.
3. New perks and for the most part the perks are chosen to maximize competition--no set of perks is overpowering in all theaters.
4. Host migration has worked every time--no drops back to the lobby--so far, at least.
5. New and in my opinion improved kill streak rewards--especially the break into two sections, Assault and Support with Assault being very similar to prior versions and Support totally new.
======
Now the 'nits'--those things that aren't really a CON but are definitely something that can be improved upon.
1. Gameplay smoothness too much of a priority over "What You See Is What You Get". By this I mean that the programmers seem to have sacrificed accuracy of the simulation for smoothness. This results in minor "He isn't where I see him" situations.
2. The 'run' button, by default a press of the left stick (LS) joystick, is not always checked when changing the position of the joystick. This can result in dropping out of sprint with the button still pressed or not going into sprint when you begin a movement with the button already pressed. I don't know if this is a limitation of the XBox controller system or an inattention to detail by the programmers. If possible the status of the sprint button should be checked anytime a movement is initiated with the joystick and it apparently isn't.
3. No individual audio level controls. I would really like to have the special effects, i.e. explosions, game generated audio (not the chat channel), gunfire, etc. separated out. With my Astro 40s the explosions are far too loud in relation to other sounds. I would like the ability to lower FX volume without lowering the sound of footsteps for example.
4. The times one gets 'stuck' on something in the area without seeing it in their 'peripheral vision'. For example, I sometimes get stuck on a small piece of debris--one that would normally slide out of the way if hit by your foot. Some things are designed to be moved out of the way by player movement, but a lot aren't when they should be. This has improved from prior versions, but I still think there is room for improvement.
5. Pulling the internet connection still results in a drop back to the lobby. It is really frustrating to be playing well in a match and have the host 'pull the plug' causing the game to immediately exit to the lobby. It would be great if Microsoft/Game developers could find a way to rectify or at least reduce this.
6. The amount of time needed to level up to the max level before prestige keeps increasing. Eighty levels! Don't be ridiculous--65 is plenty.
======
Now the CON--the only thing I really don't like about CoD:MW3:
As in Black Ops the network bandwidth leveling code, i.e. that code that attempts to level the playing field with respect to ping times often (but not always) greatly favors those with a slow internet connection. I had a 50M down and 30M up fiber connection and in 90% of my games the enemy was always a second or two ahead of me, .e. I died from their gunfire before I actually saw them come around the corner. In 10% of my games the situation was reversed. I would come around the corner and have up to two seconds to fire before the 'enemy' began firing and this was against players that I know are quicker than I.
I had my ISP lower my internet speed to 15M down and 5M up and the situation is slightly better. I would say that in 75% of my games I am at a disadvantage. That still leaves a quarter of my matches being 'fun' rather than frustrating--enough to keep me playing MW3 online.
I know that part of the problem is geographic--i.e. it is not all internet speed related--so the situation will never be perfect with today's internet topography but those with faster internet should not be hobbled by game code as they apparently are.
Single Player: the story is exactly what you'd expect from a MW title. The story doesn't dissapoint. It adds depth to the characters and to the MW canon as a whole. The highlight of it is getting to walk around in Juggy armor.
Single Player Spec Ops: done perfectly. This time around however we also get a 'horde mode' which adds a new challenge to playing solo. You start at level 1 and gain lvls like you would in multiplayer. Each new level unlocks perks and attachments along with new, more difficult levels.
Multiplayer: Is everything you could want and more. This time around, you get a Prestige token for every other MW game where you have prestiged. Meaning you can start off with upto 4 tokens. With these you can unlock custom classes, weapons, deathstreaks, perks, and tactical and lethal equipment. You also gain an additional token every time you prestige ingame.
CoD Elite Service: The service is a great all around tool. Theres videos on the website for each map along with several weapons which offer valuable insight. It also offers stat tracking with too many details to get into in this review here. Elite members also get a head start on DLC before PS 3 and PC users.
If you fancy yourself a FPS gamer, this is a must have in your library.
It was a great story in the single campaign and I'm glad they fixed the never ending closet from the original Modern Warfare but I will say the AI is fixed on you always. Doesn't matter that you have a whole unit with you. Also you can't flank so as soon as you see them, they "aim bot" switch to your direction and shoot you. I want a more realistic AI.
Multiplayer is the same. New weapons, new maps (most and probably only thing I'm excited about), and new equipment. Quick Scoopers are back but BOO, Tactical Nukes are gone Yay and Support Package is great for me cause I'm not a sit back and camp kinda guy.
Call of Duty Elite is not amazing. It's a cheaper way to get all the maps if you play a lot but I think the information and stats should have come with the game.
I still love Call of Duty but the door is open for someone to be next FPS king.
This game is not BF3. So what? It is different enough to allow different gameplay and appeal to people who want something other than CoD has to offer.
