Modern Warfare is back. On November 8th, the best selling first person action series of all time returns with the epic sequel to the multiple Game of the Year award winner Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
Amazon.com
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is First-person Shooter rooted in a fictional, but ultra realistic near-future conflict of mostly American forces with those of the Russian Federation around the globe. The third installment in the Modern Warfare branch of the Call of Duty franchise, Modern Warfare 3 features a heavy focus on multiplayer gameplay which includes innovative new functionality that encourages multiple gameplay combat strategies, a new 2-player co-op option, new play modes, weapons and more. The game also includes a gripping single player campaign that picks up where Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 left off, and game integration with the Call of Duty: Elite online service.
Do What is Necessary in the Face of Invasion
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is a direct sequel to the previous game in the series, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. In the game's single player campaign Russian Ultranationalist Vladimir Makarov continues his manipulation of Russian Federation forces in their invasion of the United States and Europe. In their way stands characters like Task Force 141 Captain John "Soap" MacTavish, former SAS Captain John Price as well as new playable characters from Delta Force and the British SAS. Engage enemy forces in New York, Paris, Berlin and other attack sites across the globe. The world stands on the brink, and Makarov is intent on bringing civilization to its knees. In this darkest hour, are you willing to do what is necessary.
Multiplayer That is Bigger and Better Than Ever
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 delivers a multiplayer experience that continues to raise the bar by focusing on fast-paced, gun-on-gun combat, along with innovative features that support and enhance a large variety of play-styles. Now, you can truly define your approach with a toolkit more expansive than any previous title.
Continue the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare in the third release in the series.

Pointstreaks and Strike Packages
Killstreaks, benefits and abilities awarded for stringing together multiple kills, have been transformed into Pointstreaks, creating a system that rewards players both for landing kills and completing objectives. These rewards have been broken up into three different categories, known as Strike Packages:
- Assault - Pointstreaks within this package chain together and deal direct damage. It includes classics like the Predator Missile and Attack Helicopter. Your streak resets on death.
- Support - Pointstreaks within this package do not chain, focusing instead on surveillance and disruption. Your streak does not reset on death meaning they will respawn with you.
- Specialist - Pointstreaks within this package are designed for advanced players. Rewards come in the form of additional perks for optimal performance. These perks last until death.
Weapon Proficiencies
Just like your player, weapons now rank up, unlocking additional attachments, reticules, camos and the new proficiency category. Weapon Proficiencies not only allow you to get better with weapons, they also allow you customize your weapons with helpful attributes such as "Kick" for reduced recoil, "Impact" for deeper penetration through hard surfaces and much more. Many proficiencies are specific to their weapons class. And all are geared towards enhancing a certain play style and can allow for efficient use of your favorite weapons in maps and game modes in which they might not otherwise be the best choice.
Modes and Match Customization
Along with the return of the fan favorites Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 introduces several new game modes. Collect dog tags from killed players, including those on your squad while you prevent the opposing squad from taking yours in Kill Confirmed mode. In Team Defender mode, grab the flag and protect the flag carrier for as long as you can to increase your team's score. In addition players will enjoy user generated match mode functionality which allows you to configure any mode how you want it and then share these over the Call of Duty: Elite online service.
2-player Co-op Special Ops Survival Mode
Special Ops cooperative action returns with a bevy of additions, including 16 new objective-based missions and the all-new Survival Mode. Team up online, locally, or play solo and face endless waves of attacking enemies throughout every multiplayer map. Purchase and customize your weapons, air support, equipment and abilities to stand up against increasingly difficult forces and land a spot on the leaderboards. Earn experience and rank up with the newly implemented progression system. The higher the rank, the more weapons, air support, and gear armories you will have available to customize so you can change your tactics on the fly. In addition to the action packed battle for freedom, the cooperative Survival Mode also serves as an effective training tool for competitive multiplayer action.
Call of Duty: Elite
Call of Duty: Elite is an online multiplayer oriented service launched simultaneously with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. The service offers both free and subscription based levels of access and is dedicated to the game franchise, featuring lifetime statistics across multiple games, social-networking options, competitions, a mobile app, Facebook integration and more.

So how is it? Well, for those that don't like to read long reviews, I'll leave you with this. It is the definition of copy and paste. Take that as you wish. For everyone else, keep reading.
Modern Warfare 3 takes place directly after Modern Warfare 2. No shocker there, right? Neither is the rest of the campaign. You fight your way through New York against the Russians, blow up their navy fleet, head to Africa, then England, France, Germany, and finally you head to chase after the same bad guy you were after in Modern Warfare 2.
In all honesty, there is nothing new here. It honestly feels like Infinity Ward thinks I'm a male that's either between the ages of 13 and 18 (or still has the mindset of such age), or I'm just incredibly stupid and all I want to see is action, action, action, action, action. You know those "guy movies" that are action-packed, but repetitive? That's Modern Warfare 3's campaign. This is also where some of the cut and paste comes in. Remember back in Modern Warfare 2 when you were a Marine and at the start of one of the last levels, your character looks down at his bloody hands? Same thing happens in Modern Warfare 3, except you're a part of Delta Force, your hands aren't bloody, you're in Berlin, and your name isn't Ramirez. You remember the map Pipeline from the first Modern Warfare game? Remember the tallest building in the map, how it had three levels and people sometimes sniped from the very top? Yup, that building has made its return in the campaign of Modern Warfare 3. But more on the copy and paste thing later.
Continuing on, a lot of the missions start off the exact same way. You're usually either hopping out of an airplane, or you're playing the stealth role. I would say half of the missions featuring Price and Soap (yes, they're back) started the same way....in some bushes, trying to sneak past militia without alerting them, only to alert them later on in the level. Even parts of the missions themselves feel like they were ripped straight out of previous Modern Warfare titles. Remember "All Ghillied Up" from the first Modern Warfare? Remember how part of the level had you going prone underneath some trucks? You do the exact same thing in Modern Warfare 3. Only this time, the trucks are perpendicular to you, and one doesn't come after another to give you more cover. Overall, if you've played Modern Warfare 2's campaign, you already know how this one is going to play out. Funny thing is, Modern Warfare 2 took me four hours to finish on Regular, while Modern Warfare 3 took me almost five. Still, a very short campaign mode, and clearly not the reason why people would buy this game.
Just a quick statement for Spec Ops. Spec Ops has not influenced this review in anyway, shape, or form, because I find it very unentertaining and repetitive, though I know some people love it. Some of my own friends can't stop playing it, where as I'm bored within the first five minutes of firing it up. Basically, if you like Firefight from Halo, Horde from Gears, or Zombies from the Treyarch-developed CoD games, you'll like Spec Ops.
The majority of the fans stay for the multiplayer. Modern Warfare 3's multiplayer is, again, hardly different from any Call of Duty game you've played before. You have your Deathmatch, Domination, Ground War, Headquarters, Search and Destroy, and Capture the Flag modes we have all seen for years, now. A new addition to the roster is Kill Comfirmed. It's a Team Deathmath variant where, if you kill someone, they leave behind floating dog tags you have to pick up. However, anyone can pick them up. If a teammate picks them up, it's a point for yout team. However if someone from the opposing team picks them up, or the person you killed comes back and picks them up, neither team gets a point. And also there is a Community Playlist that, as of now, features only one game. Only time will tell what will be added and dropped, but for now, it really isn't anything special.
The multiplayer works the same way as previous games in the franchise, as I mentioned earlier. There are a few new weapons and attachments, but overall, if you've played a Call of Duty game before, you've played this one. The only difference is there is a seperate ranking system for each weapon you use, and those are also separate from the main ranking system. However, some experience points you earn throughout the game go to both your rank and your weapon rank. Your weapon levels up everytime you score a kill, destroy equipment with it, or use it to take down killstreaks. Leveling up your weapon unlocks new attachments, camo, and proficiencies. A Prociciency is like a perk, but for your weapon. For example, you can have one taht reduces the recoil, or one that increases the range of your weapon. I think it's a nice touch, for once. Unneccessary, but still a nice touch. But gone are the days of buying attachments like in Black Ops, though earning items in this game isn't really much harder in my opinion.
My main issue with the multiplayer is, once again, lag. We already know Activision and Infinity Ward spend as little money as possible to keep this game afloat and selling, but seriously, it's starting to show in a horrid way. There have been numerous times where I would shoot an enemy, he's almost dead, I'm still shooting at him, haven't moved my sight off of his body, and he kills me. As I sit and wonder "How could that have happened?!!", I watched the killcam to see that my last five rounds didn't even register. They came out, and you can see me still shooting him, but it's as if the game just said "OK, you shot him enough; he gets to kill you". There are also random moments where the game will literally freeze while playing online. And I mean freeze to the point where you think your console has frozen. I've seen random slowdowns while playing online as well. You know how when the game shows the last killcam, it slows down a little bit so you can see the killshot? Imagine the game slowing down a little bit while you're sprinting, for no reason. You would think that Activision would treat its new cash cow a bit better than that. Hopefully a patch later down the line will fix things. I highly doubt such a patch will be released, knowing their track record with Modern Warfare 2.
But to continue from my copy and paste mentioning earlier, it's very hard to deny this game being in copy and paste form. The red dot sight attachment is literally ripped from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and touched up to look pretty. A lot of the guns sound the same, and virtually every single attachment that you saw in Modern Warfare 2 is back in Modern Warfare 3. The only new addition I've seen is the hybrid sight, which combines a zoomed scope and a holographic sight. The perks are mostly just re-used perks from previous games, as well, though (of course) there are some new ones. Blind Eye makes you immune to air support and sentries. Assassin makes you immune to UAV, sentries, thermal, and heartbeat sensors. Those two perks make Cold-Blooded from Modern Warfare 2. Bling from the same game is now a proficiency for weapons. Scavenger is the same thing is has been since Modern Warfare 2 (though I don't mind this since I like the perk). The Main Menu layout looks exactly like Modern Warfare 2, except it's a different color scheme and has different pictures to represent the modes. The campaign even feels like the previous games. You're basically doing the exact same thing over and over again. Kill this group of enemies, move foward, kill another group, move foward, go in this building, kill the people that show up, move foward, kill another group, move forward, random action scene, random "Jump and reach for the chopper!!!" moment that was cool in 2007, use some random turret, move forward, use some random vehicle, move forward, yet ANOTHER AC-130 scene, move forward, repeat in the next Call of Duty game that was announced just weeks after this one was released.
It's unfortunate that Infinity Ward and Activision proved some people right with this game. I was hoping they would actually back what they said (remember when they told us no Final Stand? they lied) and would at least TRY to push out something different, even in the slightest sense. But instead, we get the "just add a few things so we can call it new", different. Instead of your mother making you baked chicken and corn for dinner, she made you baked chicken, corn, and seasoned the corn with a pinch of salt, but she had to tell you she added salt, or else you wouldn't have noticed it. However, at the same time, it should have been known this was going to happen. Overall, I would give this game 3 stars....BARELY. It's more like a 2 1/2 stars. I wouldn't even care if they had re-used EVERYTHING and changed nothing new. I just wish they would get the multiplayer right and fix the horrid lag issues people have been complaining about for two years. Hopefully a patch will fix this along the lines (and if one does, I'll update this), but I wouldn't hold my breath.
If you've been playing Call of Duty since the second one, like me, either wait and see what happens with future updates, or completely skip this one. You're not missing anything. And if you loved Call of Duty 4, like I did, I HIGHLY recommend you skip this one.
The haters of this game are hysterical. If you only read user "reviews" on game sites, Amazon or Metacritic, you would think this is the worst game available on this generation of consoles. Many of these people either bought the game and play it nonstop or never bought it in the first place (but if you have seen the sales numbers then you know MOST gamers bought this).
Let me digress from the review even before I start it. For example, if you look at the all-time PS3 review scores on Metacritic, the 88 rating from the CRITICS makes MW3 tied for 51st (with such games as the original Uncharted, NHL 9, 10, & 11, Dead Space, Battlefield Bad Company 2, COD: Black Ops and BioShock 2).
If you look at every game on Metacritic's site with a CRITICS review of 80 or higher for PS3 only (100's of games) you find three games that have USER review scores in the red (less than 5 out of 10): MW2 (2.9), Madden 09 (4.6), Dragon Age 2 (3.9). I want you to see this listing of games I am talking about. There has never been as big of a disconnect between 100s of user reviews and 100s of critical (professional) reviews.
DA2 got ripped because it took a fan favorite and "dumbed it down" by taking what made the original great and making it a mass market product. Madden and COD fall into the same trap - games that video game reject fanboys all over pounce on as "they just slapped a new year on it and released the same game."
A.K.A. Modern Warfare 2.5 as you have most likely seen before, during and after the release of this game.
Ask yourself this. Is MW3 really a 2.9? No chance.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< REVIEW STARTS HERE >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is a fantastically fun game. If you have enjoyed any of the previous MW titles (and in particular MW and MW2) then you will enjoy this game. Hands down. Whether or not you think it is MW2.5, if you liked MW2 then you should like this game as well or better. That doesn't mean it is the same game. Far from it.
I sold back my MW2 copy when I bought this game. Why? I loved MW2, but even though there are people who are still playing it, I have been playing it for two years. I want fresh maps, fresh modes, and yes, fresh graphics.
The uber nerds that say it looks "just like MW2" are not very good at the hater game. The game IS going to look/feel similar to MW2. Why?
1) It is a direct sequel. Name one sequel that didn't retain the artistic stylings of the first.
2) It is running on the BASE core engine.
3) Don't make massive changes to a formula that worked for millions of people (see Dragon Age 2).
So what has been improved/tweaked to make this a fantastic game and improve on the great MW2 in the process?
<<<< PROS >>>>
a) The multiplayer maps on MW3 have so much MORE detail, runs so smooth, and looks sharper that I can tell it is certainly an improvement on the online graphics from MW2.
b) The classic gameplay is still there and it still feels fantastic. Yes it could be the SAME... "if it ain't broke" applies here ten fold.
c) 16 NEW maps are included on the disc.. I am Level 30 on multiplayer and I still haven't played every map.
d) Kill Confirmed is a blast. Having to run to the body to "pick up" dog tags after a kill adds a fast and furious approach to Team Deathmatch and adds a whole new level of strategy. If you are a "rusher" then this mode is made for you. It is a great way to get a good amount of XP, because even if you don't get kills, picking up opponents tags (Kill Confirmed) or your own fallen comrades (Kill Denied) earns you XP).
e) MW3 now has the great Theater system that Black Ops brought in the fold so that you can go and watch/edit/upload all of your best (or worst) clips to YouTube straight from the game. This is intuitive and works like a charm.
f) COD Elite (the free version - once it is fully working) is very addicting for stats nerds. You can access it from computers and mobile devices and can Create-A-Class and view weapon stats and "heat zones" on the maps to see where the action tends to be.
g) New guns with old favorites returning.
h) Gun sounds are amazing.
i) New and very balanced perks.
j) Some new cool killstreaks and old favorites returning.
k) etc, etc, etc.
AND THAT IS ONLY THE MULTIPLAYER.
I played the first level of single player and it was action packed and enjoyable - just what I expect from the MW series.
I love spec ops, and I LOVED playing Survival mode for the first time. Wave after wave of increasingly aggressive enemies swarm you (and a friend if you wish and have any friends) in Survival mode and it is fun to play. Huge fan (I never played Zombies or Horde mode but I am told by the haters that it is the "same."
<<<< CONS >>>>
Lag and hit detection are bad. Just Google/Twitter/YouTube "Lag MW3" and you will see many, many hits. The companies that made the game have already made many tweaks and are working on a fix for lag issues as I type this.
No other cons for me at this time. Again, others might not want to pay $60 bucks for what they feel is basically the fantastic game from 2009, but it was worth every penny to me. It is, at worst, just as fun as MW2, and in many ways I already prefer it.
<<<< CONCLUSION >>>>
The bottom line is that there is a TON of content in this game. If you like COD-style online multiplayer, the COD-style single player adventure, and hours of co-op fun in Spec Ops and Survival Mode - then the is the best - and newest - game out there.
