A little book with a huge impact!

Monica is the writer in residence at the Jack Kerouac house. I live around the corner, but we've never meet. I bought this book, without much expectation, to support poetry writing, and the residency. What a found was a tightly woven gem of a book. Small in size, but large in scope. Monica's poems and stories are riveting. Her writing clearly expresses the pain, joy, and paradox of life. I was left wondering how many of the poems were autobiographical? A few poems into the book and it become obvious why almost half of the poems in this collection have been previously published in the likes of Spoon River, Nimrod, and Drunken Boat. My favorite poem is "In Supermarkets in Italy..." Monica has a such a wonderful way of clobbering you over the head with the obvious disguised carefully and perfectly in well crafted words filled with wit and emotion. "Traditions" is another of my favorites. It is laced (pardon the pun) with irony and honesty. I found the entire book an easy, but powerful read. Stories that are separate, but connected. Monica may well have invented a new genre of poetry. I would call it Scar-chism. My only objection is the cover. Don't leave it on your night stand. Highly recommend!!!

Quietly Exhilarating

Wendel's poems are short, but sharp.

Her poems are generally not erotic, but suffused with a kind of languid sensuality that endures whether she is describing sex, a pedestrian, or a snow-blanketed cityscape. They explore the dichotomy of someone who acts unselfconsciously, then second-guesses herself at night in bed.

Wendel's love of her city, or at least the parts of it she shows us, is obvious. Sometimes the location she chooses is important to the poem, but more often it just serves as a windswept backdrop to whatever she chooses to focus on.

I could continue to attempt to describe her poems, but by the time I finished, I'd likely have written more words than exist in this book. "Call It a Window" is short (maybe a half hour of reading), but packed with interesting imagery and ideas. Subtly different than any other chapbook I've read, "Call It a Window" is definitely worth a look.

Excellent Poetry

This chapbook is a wonderful read. Monica's insightful poems touch on a variety of topics. She explores the confines of sexuality and personal relationships. Her poetry moves from different localities around New York, including Long Island, Brooklyn, and Manhattan. The size of the work is appealing as you can breeze through it in less than 30 minutes. Fantastic all around work.
