Catelyn/Cat is super annoying with how defensive she is in the whole two paragraphs of the two dudes fighting over her--"I can save myself," "I'm not a princess," "I'm not some prize to be won," etc. Shut up already; it feels more like the author is trying to convince us this girl is a tough feminist. But we shouldn't need the author to try so hard with a character; instead, Catelyn comes out sounding very rude.
I'm really disappointed. The author should invest in a developmental editor to help her flesh out characters and the plot, as well as to let some "twists" go; you don't need to pack every terrible thing in the world into one book (rape, torture, sex, losing virginity, poison, kidnapping, animal cruelty, stalking). With so much of these things going on, small wonder no one subject/thing was really delved into.
Spoiler alert: Seriously, how stupid is it that after she is kidnapped, which lasts all of 3 paragraphs, the rich guy rescues her and drives her to a hotel for sex? And immediately after sex, she feels herself getting woozy, because SURPRISE, the knife the kidnapper nicked her with was POISONED. And she almost dies. I guess that will teach her to leave the crime of the scene before the cops and medics arrive just to have cheap sex. But really--that "twist" was ridiculous. It's like the author wanted to keep us on our toes by injecting even more unlikely scenarios into an already unlikely one. I can't decide which part annoys me more--going to a hotel for sex right after being kidnapped, or that the kidnapper had used a poisoned knife (what is this, a Disney soft porn book?).
I'm a romance ghostwriter, so I know how this works. It feels like the publisher handed in a plot and the writer hit the plot points, filling in extra words to string the points together.
I've read many reviews criticizing the graphic triggers. I only got up to the memort of the mother's rape. Yeah. That was unnecessary. I closed the book for good soon thereafter. At least it was free.
I've got to say the book kept me on my toes. There were some twists that changed the direction I thought the book was going to take. I was really on edge when the book finished because I really wanted to get my hands on book #2. Yes, the book ends on a cliffhanger and is the first part of three.
I liked Cat. She's trying to do the best with the cards she's been dealt with. She's afraid and unsure whom to trust and she's fighting her attraction to Ash with everything she's got until she's not. I wasn't a huge fan of her indecisiveness. I even liked Ash, even though I felt as if he really needed to get his act together.
I can't wait to get my hands on the second installment and see where Cat and Ash go from the impasse they're currently in. If you're looking for a good read with suspense, mystery, some angst, and some hot sex, Call Me Cat is definitely something you should check out!
