Most North Americans ar unfamiliar with the Amazion River, especially its head waters in Peru. Author Paticia Woodruff provides excellent historic and cultural background information in a first person narrative. The book is about a "coming of age" voyage for her daughter in which they visit shamans, swim with pink dolphins and dine on piranha fish. At he end of the river trip they return to Lima, Peru and we are taken into its museums open the doors to Peru's history before the Spanish explorers.
Woodruff is an artist and created the illustrations throughout the book. Her daughter is a skillful photographer and also contributed to the illustrations.
Whether you're simply curious about the Amazon or planning a trip there you will find this a worthwhile book. We carried a copy with us and referred to it daily during our tour.
