While I adored the first book, it took me a while to decide to read this one. I have read so many high fantasy books in the past that, for some reasons, it makes me hesitate to read more. I shouldn't have. As soon as I started it, it pulled me right in. I love the author's voice and her way of telling the story.
Ms. Sheldrake's imagination seems to have no end. Her worlds are complex yet described in a subtle manner through the eyes of her characters. I also love the way she uses the different classes in combat, from the bards using song to invigorate fighters, and mages for protection or powerful attacks, to the weapon wielders and the rogue who coats his weapons with potions. She seems to have thought about everything.
And if that isn't enough, add drawings of scenes here and there through-out the book for the readers' delight.
