How Does Your Calling Align With Carrying Out God's Will?
Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2020
In Called to Lead, the author shares great insight into our calling and integrating our faith and work and how it carries forward for the rest of our lives. Martin Luther King, Jr. said it best when he said, "If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well." This book provides many leadership take-a-ways, but in particular, those which apply to being a servant leader. The book provides many leadership lessons from the Bible, as well as the author's leadership journey in Corporate America, and paves the way for church leaders to lead the way by lifting up others to build up and serve the heavenly kingdom. I found the book to contain so many helpful resources to equip me in continuing my faith journey and enabling me to teach and care for all those I encounter in my earthly pilgrimage. If you have yet to find your calling, I'd recommend this book as a great place to begin. The book provides lots of application for both Christians and non-Christians alike.

5.0 out of 5 starsNot Just Another Leadership Book

This book contains so many "nuggets" of information that it's hard to identify what I liked best about it. As stated in the headline, this is not just another book on leadership - or for that matter, Christian living. It is, however, a compilation of personal stories, leadership resources, and examples where God has used ordinary people to fulfill his purposes in various roles and stages of life. Whether you are a pastor, plumber or parent, the principles shared will encourage and motivate you to "Coram Deo - Live one's entire life in the presence of God, before the face of God, under the authority of God, and to the glory of God."
From the Author
In my book Called to Lead: Living and Leading for Jesus in the Workplace, I share what I've learned about calling, vocation, work and leadership from my experience of leading in both the general marketplace and the church for more than 40 years. I actually started the writing process - primarily movie and book reviews - by editing a monthly church newsletter nearly 22 years ago. That newsletter eventually grew to about 30 pages each month. The church newsletter transitioned to an independent blog, CoramDeotheBlog.comabout 7 years ago. I was a leader at a Fortune 50 organization for nearly 38 years, and have been a leader in my church for more than 24 years. I've also served on the boards of two professional organizations. My writing has come from my experiences in the workplace and church, as well as from the many books that I've read about leadership, as well as professional and personal growth. I didn't initially intend for my writing to turn into a book, but over time it gradually came together. I put together an initial draft of the book two years ago and handed it over to my editor. I continued to write and we added that material to the book. We would go through long periods without working on it, but used the COVID-19 quarantine period to finish it up and publish it. I hope you find some takeaways from the book that help you to see that God values your work, whatever it is, as long as you are doing it for Him. I also hope that the book helps you to see that servant leadership is the best way to lead. I'd love to interact with you to hear what you think of the book, address any questions you may have, etc. Below is my contact information. I think this is an amazing book on leadership. The author is my brother-in-law, who has been a wonderful husband to my sister for 40 years. Due to health troubles I have, reading is very difficult for me, but this book was relatively easy for me to get through. What particularly stood out to me in the book is Bill’s description of his personality, the introvert, shyness, etc. We very much share the same personality qualities. Some of the other emotional-type topics in the book were how compassion and empathy should be shared by leaders and those they lead. Also listening skills. Anyone, particularly leaders, should learn about hearing and not listening. I am so glad for Bill for writing such a wonderful book. It is great for many types of people to learn from.
Bill Pence does an outstanding job of reinforcing the value and importance of integrating our faith with our work while also providing concrete, practical ways for us to do so. I’m especially grateful for the way the author consistently tied scripture to his beliefs, findings, and recommendations. He also quoted numerous authors to provide added support and emphasis to his already solid, proven recommendations. The helpful questions at the end of each chapter are thought-provoking. They definitely cause one to think more deeply about what was just read and how to bring it home. Bill does a terrific job of guiding readers to better understand and define their unique calling. In addition, his suggestions and guidance for leaders are second to none. As someone nearing retirement, I was very thankful for the chapter focusing on Retirement and the Christian. It was not only enlightening but also refreshing. Bill Pence’s educational, career, and church-related background provide him with an excellent repertoire of experiences to help us weave our faith into every aspect of our lives. Many thanks, Bill, for a most outstanding book!

Written from the heart, and based on a foundation of Scripture and thoughtful commentary by other writers, "Called to Lead" offers encouragement to Christians who feel guilty because their day job is in the so-called "secular world." The author points out that for the Christian, all work is "full-time Christian service." He challenges and coaches believers to achieve God's plan for their lives in the workplace. I especially appreciate Chapter 9, "Challenges in Leadership," and Chapter 13, "Why the Church Should be Developing Leaders for the General Marketplace & How to Do It."
