Callie has nightmares about the one life that she failed in the worst way. Her work lead her to a mother being abused by her husband, but the abused wife won't press charges. When there was a custody hearing regarding welfare of the kids, Callie testified that the mother is fit and mother got custody. Six months later, the father in a drunken rage killed the baby, and Callie felt responsible. She tried to live on, but she cannot let go of the guilt, even though she tried by doting on her grandchildren. At her church Sunday school where she teaches, she noticed a girl Iris, unusually quiet and withdrawn. She felt compelled to investigate, even though she should not get involved... Iris has a huge secret... she and her sister Samantha Evans, were actually raising Sam's baby. Their mother died in a car crash year and a half ago. Their father left them ten years ago... Sam's working multiple jobs trying to make ends meet, and they cannot let any one know there is no adult, or CPS will break up their family. What they don't know is the father is actually looking for them. Steve Evans, the former addict, had found Christ five years ago, and dragged himself back into the light. He was sharing his experience across the country on a book tour, and had hired investigators trying to track down his family. He found the obituary of the wife, and he's desperately searching for the two daughters. When Callie decided to get involved with Iris' life, she will need all her strength and faith to reunite the broken family, and find peace with her own past.
You'll shed a few tears along the way for a family that had suffered and endured so much, and how a woman heeded God's calling to serve and protect that family with help of friends and family, despite every reason not to. The religious references are not too explicit or jarring, but you'll notice they're there. All in all, emotional book.
Characters are a 50 something year old woman trying to forget and forgive herself. A 17 year old sister, an 11 year old sister and a 5 month old baby living on their own trying not to let anyone know of their situation all the while making it work, barely. Highly recommend.
