High end look mid level quality.
on April 1, 2017
This would be a $400 knife set if the quality was perfect (and they took the "China" off the blade). The Damascus Steal blade look nice, it resembles some of the uber high end (Shun) knives. Long review short for the skimmers... I am keeping them and considering buy another set as a wedding gift for my cousin.
Let's start with VG-1 steel. knife gurus debated on what is the best steel and temper for a blade, there is a give and take for every steel. VG-1 is in the debate and that's good enough for me. Unfortunately not much is said about the temper of this blade and VG-1 is said to have a small crystal structure and could really benefit from a cryogenic quench.
The construction quality was disappointing, it make you wonder if these are QC rejects because of the price and quality. There is a gap between the steel and the plastic where the plastic tapers at the blade, I filled the gap with thin CA glue because I thought the plastic was likely to break. The taper of the plastic handle is inconsistent and not simertical on every of the knifes. The serrated bread knife has an an inconsistent serration and looks bad with the laminated steel. I can still see some of the coarse grind marks on one of the blades where they shaped it, this should have been polished off. The scissors DO NOT come apart for easy cleaning, and the plastic injection mold handles (covered in TPU?) only look good from 10 feet away, but they feel nice in the hand.
Over all it's a descent knife set where price, quality, and appearance suits me.
