Editorial Reviews
Review
Calvados is an astounding 700-page stroll through the history and culture of Normandy and Calvados producers, through orchards and cellars, down to seemingly esoteric details, like what a producer might have scribbled in chalk on a typical barrel. Mr. Neal looks at the multitude of different apples, from sweet to acidic, that might go into a producer s blend. --Eric Asimov, New York Times (Nov. 2, 2011)

not only extensive coverage of the beverage but also includes much information on the history, culture, and foods of the region. A lavishly produced (but non-coffee table) volume. Can be used as a proxy for cider, as the producers are largely the same. Despite the length & scope of the book (with the author drinking his way through most of Normandy), not every producer is covered: it includes Bertrand Dupont and Francis Dupont, but not Etienne Dupont; thus a great book but not (quite) perfect.

I paid top dollar.... over $120 for this out of print book. It arrived with the cover bound UPSIDE DOWN. It was a defect book from the printer. If I resell it I will have to disclose the problem and offer it at a steep discount. Was not inspected by Goodwill LA.

Wonderful book. For me it hit the right balance of nerdy details and fun backgrounds that might interest other people in conversation. If their eyes glaze over, you need to stop talking.

Everything you could possibly want to know about Calvados and its producers written in an entertaining but informative style. Information on everything from the producers, production, the cows that graze under the apple trees and which Calvados to drink with which movies!
I've been a fond drinker of Calvados for many years and have been lucky enough to visit Normandy many times. This book has taught me many of the nuances of this wonderful digestif and I now understand why I like my favourite producer as much as I do.
Essential reading for anyone who enjoys a Calvados.

This book is huge and packed full of information, beautiful photos and anecdotes. It's more than just a few pretty pictures, and is more of a complete overview of Calvados' history, as well as the history of the region. This book makes me impatient for our next trip - we only have one bottle of calvados left!

Grat book but damaged cover.
Reviewed in Germany on October 14, 2020Verified Purchase
The content of the book has been researched with great effort. It's fun to read. You will be informed not only about calvados but also about cows, meat, cheese and other things from Normandy. Unfortunately almost all corners of the cover were badly damaged. Therefore deduction for the stars.
