PreS-Gr 2—When a young starling gets glasses (or "spectacles," as the exacting birdie prefers to call them), his friends tease him. But Calvin is so excited to finally be able to see small things clearly that he trips and falls in the woods and becomes wedged under a rock. Undaunted, he uses his glasses to reflect sunlight and signal to the other starlings using Morse code, and soon all the other birds want spectacles, too. Though the topic is an underrepresented one and the busy, cartoon illustrations are full of humorous touches, such as the "Bug and Worm Fine Dining" restaurant and a "Nest Supplies" store in the town of Treeville, the characters, from the know-it-all Calvin to the bespectacled librarian with the sensible bob, are blandly stereotypical.—Kathleen Kelly MacMillan, Carroll County Public Library, MD
"The irresistible story . . . will put smiles on the faces of readers of all ages . . . The illustrations are wildly original and full of funny details . . . With their stick legs, flat heads and fluffy hair(s), the starlings are endearingly comical. Between its heartwarming (but never treacly) story and quirky illustrations, this tale should be a staple among book-loving families as well as in libraries and elementary classrooms for years to come." —Kirkus Reviews (Starred Review)

“Calvin, Look Out! A Bookworm Birdie Gets Glasses” is a cute children’s book by Jennifer Berne, illustrated by Keith Bendis. Calvin the starling loves to read but is startled to discover that he is having trouble making out the words and pictures until a kindly librarian encourages him to have his eyes checked by an optometrist who confirms that he is suffering from something called hyperopia, which means that he has trouble seeing things that are near. Calvin gets new glasses and has to deal with ridicule from his flock, until he shows that his glasses are good for more than one thing, and changes their attitude.
