I had read that the whistle doesn't work (agreed- it doesn't) but, I didn't care much b/c I never used the whistle on my old teapot. I'm usually doing other things in the kitchen so when I see the steam form, use this to remove the pot from the stove.
The WORST part of this pot however, is that the top over the spout MELTED. Yep- completely melted and looks like burnt plastic running off of the tip. Being that this is a teapot, intended to be on a stove, heating boiling water, it's very unclear to me how you would choose a plastic material with lower melting temperature. My old teapot lasted 12 years. This one hasn't even made it 2 months.
Update: I give this pot a one star. Forst I thought that I had the stove hot or so, but now I cooked water and I was in the kitchen waiting for th water to cook. I cannot walk away because the whisle is not working! Then I saw flames! The plastic cap got flames! And the red handle was on fire too! If I was not in the kitchen my house would have burned down. THis is an EXPENSIVE lesson not to choose a pot for its looks only. I am planning to use the rest of it as a plant holder. I dont dare to use it for water cooking anymore . I will ad pictures of the burned parts later.
I had to purchase yet another new teakettle as I changed the color of my kitchen. I did the perfunctory search of the net, department stores and specialty stores, finally happening upon this one. It had all I wanted - no seam on the bottom (which eventually leaks), solid black enamel exterior, large size, a top that won't fall off when water is poured, a rim that won't rust and a whistle that can be heard (yet doesn't sound like a train's screeching brakes). So I bought it.
The piece de resistance? It didn't cost an arm and a leg! Woo Hoo! I have used it since I received it and I LOVE it! It whistles! It doesn't leak! It was not expensive! And best of all, it's the last one I will have to buy. Recommend this? Oh, most definitely.
I bought this pot for my mother and she loved it. It worked well and looked beautiful enough to keep on the stove as decoration. However, I assumed that the pot would whistle. Most tea kettles do; I thought that was the whole point of having a tea kettle, for the whistle to tell you when it's done, otherwise you would just use a regular pot. But it's not the manufacturer's fault, it's my fault for not looking closely at the reviews.
The problem is that my mother likes to just set the pot on the stove and do work around the house or get some work done from home at the computer while it gets to a boil, and a few days ago she totally forgot about it. She was getting some work done and it sat on the stove for over an hour with no whistle to remind her about it and the pot just... started melting. All the water evaporated and since the fire had nothing left to heat up, it attacked the pot. We've only had it a couple weeks so it's pretty disappointing. But once again, I don't blame the manufacturer, seller, or even my mother, it's my fault for not paying attention to the reviews.
Don't let this deter you if you want this tea kettle, though. It's very pretty, and gets the job done. If you don't mind that it does not have a whistle, this is a good pot. Just be careful letting forgetful people use it.
UPDATE: I just boiled this dry! After a hard day at work, I put this on and sat down. Next thing I know, it has boiled dry!!!!! This is now going into the trash. Don't let the pretty ensnare you! Don't get this!!!
