Editorial Reviews

Review

"The Calypso Directive is a fast paced and hard to put down thriller, a solidly recommended pick for those seeking a novel of high science and the greed that seeks to exploit it." (Midwest Book Review)

"A biological thriller that mixes a series of "what-if" scenarios as it moves from New York to Europe in the blink of an eye." (Kirkus Reviews)

"A Brilliant Thriller... The Calypso Directive drives home the point that it is not what you write about that matters, but how you write it. Even if you're not into thrillers, keep him on your radar." (Cornell Daily Sun)

"The Calypso Directive was so good on so many levels that I'm certainly looking forward to another outing with these characters." (Charles De Lint - Fantasy & Science Fiction)

“Fast-paced and thought-provoking, The Calypso Directive is a dark tale of hubris, and the irrelevance of the individual in a culture driven by science-for-profit and science-for national security. Very believable, conceivable, scary, and real. A rocket-sled ride of a debut by Brian Andrews.” (Jopseph Heywood)

“A smart, hard-driving thriller. Andrews fires on all cylinders in THE CALYPSO DIRECTIVE.” (New York Times Bestselling Author, Grant Blackwood)

Brian Andrews in his new book, "The Calypso Directive" published by Arcade Publishing brings us into the life of Will Foster.

From the back cover: An unprecedented genetic mutation, an underground think tank, and an unscrupulous pharmaceutical company collide in this dazzling debut thriller.

For one hundred and fifty-five days, Will Foster has been locked in medical quarantine without his consent. The doctors claim he is infected with a deadly virus, but this is a lie. Encoded in his DNA is a mutation that provides immunity from disease for all who possess it, source code that Vyrogen Pharmaceuticals aims to commercialize as a multi-billion dollar gene therapy.

Against all odds, Foster escapes his laboratory prison and steals a virulent strain of bubonic plague as insurance. To help him unravel the mystery inside him, Foster contacts the only person he can trust-a former lover and microbiologist living in Vienna- and the two become fugitives, hunted across the heart of Europe.

Under the guise of averting a plague pandemic, Vryogen hires an elite, underground Think Tank to track down Foster. But when the team sets a trap for Foster, they discover they're not the only ones in the hunt. In a race against two deadly assassins, can the brilliant minds of the Think Tank unravel the truth before time runs out for their quarry?

In a novel where conscience clashes with greed, loyalty with suspicion, and paranoia with reality, THE CALYPSO DIRECTIVE deftly explores the issues of genetic exploitation and piracy. Captivating, controversial, and courageous, Andrews debut is sure to thrill and leave you wondering what secrets are locked in your DNA.

THE CALYPSO DIRECTIVE by Brian Andrews

The Calypso Directive, by Brian Andrews is a sure-to-grab- your-attention thriller about genetic exploitation, high tech science and kidnapping written with a sure hand and great talent. Without question, it is one of the best books I've read in a long time.

Shortly after starting to read it, I could feel my blood pressure rising, my pulse increasing and my heart rate going up.

Almost immediately, the story begins as a compelling and very exciting search for the truth. Will Foster, the hero, is caught up in a world of fear and confusion. You become caught up in it too. The action in the story is non-stop.

There were many times when I had to brace myself before I turned the page. I was that frightened. I would highly recommend this excellent book, but I would suggest you don't read it at night when you're alone in the house. At one point I said to my husband, "I'm reading a book. Would you please hold my hand?" I can't wait for this author's next book!

If this book was $3.99 I would have given it four stars. It was fun and easy to read. Unfortunately, the need to suspend disbelief became too heavy a weight for this slight story to bear. The problematic plot developments include an advertising executive and a research scientist facing serious physical threats from prodessional thugs and security personell and beating them every time. Also, a dialog technique used that identified the speaker by an abbreviation of their corporate role was annoying. There was also these small pieces of explicit violence that seemed out of place with the rest of the writing.

This book kept me up. The action and intensity made me not want to put it down. It was bad enough to have a big corporation and three thugs after you and then an elite team of operators. Brian makes you want to know more about his characters, and he has you rooting for your victims as they make many narrow escapes from the clutches of evil. Can't wait to read the next installment!

I really enjoyed this book. It grabbed me within the first few paragraphs as Patient 65 escaped from his "quarantine". I liked the way the bad folks (Merideth Morely and others at Vyrogen) and the good folks (the Think Tank including their newest member) were introduced, and it was a whirlwind of action from there thru the end. In addition to being a great non-stop action book, the implications of patenting of genes was very thought provoking. I hope this is more than a Great First Novel, and that other Think Tank novels follow.

although the author can definitely write a fast paced story, I found that I lost interest along the way. I did finish the book as I had gotten so far but I cannot say it was a favorite. the premise was intriguing but Andrews just lost me.

I agree with the other reviewers that this is an exciting thriller that grabs your attention right off. And, as a very pleasant surprise as exciting as the first chapters were, the end out did them. I really enjoyed the research and descriptions about the principles core to the mystery. In addition to being a very entertaining read....highly recommended....it made me think about the slippery slope of medical ethics with today's technology. Do the needs of the many out weigh the needs of the few? If so, when and under what circumstances?
