Virtue ethics is one of the oldest ethical theories in the West. Plato and Aristotle wrote nearly 2500 years ago. Since then, the Stoics, Thomists, Humeans, Nietzscheans, Confucians, and Pluralists have all had their own renditions of virtue ethics. Moreover, ever since Anscombe, Foot, and Hursthouse redefined virtue ethics in the past century, virtue ethics has been a quickly developing field.

The function of this book is to go into contemporary research on virtue ethics. There are great essays on more historical topics (e.g., Russell's "Virtue ethics, happiness, and the good life" and Kamtekar's "Ancient virtue ethics"). There are quick surveys to take virtue ethics from its ancient roots, through medieval times, though its historical decline, and back to its resurgence today (chapters 4-7). There are even essays on specialized topics like the formula for right action, Confucian virtue ethics, virtue ethics and environmentalism, and virtue ethics and bioethics. Swanton's essay on defining virtue ethics tries to make sense of what "virtue ethics" even means in a blossoming field and in light of so much variety.

I would recommend this book to anyone studying virtue ethics. The more advanced the scholar, the more this will serve as review. However, there are likely topics that will be new even to the advanced scholar. For the beginner, the surveys may be detailed and overwhelming at first, but the arrangement of the book, extensive notes, and generally good articles will help anyone along. Overall, this is a great addition to the virtue ethics literature, and I would recommend it to anyone trying to learn more about the topic from contemporary authors.

Some of the essays are better than other, of course. Overall very well written and researched. There is an article on Confucianism which was good. I wish there was one on Buddhism which I think is a pure form of virtue ethics.
