Product Description

Cambridge Audio's flagship model Azur 640P phono preamplifier employs a comprehensively specified (MM) Moving Magnet stage, as well as the higher gain needed for compatibility with high-end (MC) Moving Coil cartridges. An impressive raft of onboard technologies combines to offer a hugely dynamic, involving and open sound. In this age of music file downloads and portable MP3 devices, the trusty turntable is currently enjoying a renaissance. True to form, Cambridge Audio is answering the demands of audiophile vinyl lovers with the Azur 540P compact phono preamplifier. The Azur 640P uses superior amplification circuitry for its MM and MC stages to provide the lowest possible distortion and noise. The multi-parallel capacitors achieve exceptional RIAA accuracy of only 0.3 dB up to 50 kHz and feature a defeatable subsonic filter. "The sound of the 640P moves away from the cheerful but somewhat oppressed NAD style, leaning more towards the taut, well controlled precision of the Dynavecto," reports AudioEnz magazine. "There?s a sense of realism that will raise goosebumps with good recordings. This is a remarkable achievement for a product that retails for less than half the price of the Dynavector." The 640P's design features single-ended 'Class A' gain stages and discrete transistors instead of the more common integrated circuits. This gives less crosstalk and interference across the signal path. Topping off the features list is the superior Azur acoustically damped steel chassis and a robust anodized aluminum front plate. The rear panel benefits from gold-plated input connectors to minimize signal path interference and reduce surface degradation. An external power supply comes standard.

Quite simply put-If you have never experienced the full sound and nuances offered by vinyl, You are missing out. I bought this preamp thinking it would make a small difference in sound. I was wrong, I had bought a Denon Dl 160 Moving Coil cartridge and thought it being a great cartridge would completely change the sound of my phono setup. This however made more of a difference. It made my system sound 5x better. The treble is clean and the bells in Dark Side of the Moon MFSL sound like heaven. For the price range you wont find better than this. It sounds so much better than the phono section of my home theater receiver. Definitely recommended.

I weighed the Cambridge Audio 640p against an NAD pp2. I am very happy with this choice. I had not realized how my old $50 preamp was choking my the sound from my turntable. The LP's sing with the 640p.

Finally, I can hear the dynamic range that I knew was always there. The deep, room-filling base on the Chicago Transit Authority debut album. The dynamic range on the Wes Montgomery - A Day In The Life album. The preamp built into my Harman Kardon 3480 Stereo Receiver sounded pretty good but had too much hum. Ditched the receiver and tried the Audio Technica phono preamp, but that constricted the sound. After the disappointment with the Audio Technica, I decided to skip the Azur 540P and make sure I would get the "most bestest" sound from the 640P. The Azur 640P is indeed all the reviewers have said it is. I am satisfied with the sound this preamp produces.
