Good for use with Tesla Model 3

Although Tesla recommends against the use of extension cords for charging it’s vehicles, I would make an exception for this item. It is a beast! Heavy, thick conductor construction is used throughout. I am using it at home to charge my Tesla Model 3 with the mobile charge adapter that came with the car. There is no problem whatsoever. I measured less than 1 volt drop from end to end when charging at 32 amps. The cord is rated at 50 amps, so there is extra current carrying capacity I’m not using. The Tesla charging adapter gets warm with 32 amps, but this extension cord does not. I’m very happy to have this item. If your Tesla charging adapter is too short to reach to your NEMA 14-50 wall socket, this is your easy instant solution!

One of the things I wanted to know when buying is what type of cord this was. The description does not cover this so I will. The cord I received is STW cord, which means the outer jacket is thermoplastic, not thermoset. Thermoset is a much more durable product than thermoplastic. Furthermore, This is STW (not STOW) so it is NOT oil resistant. Ideally (at least for me), the cord would be SOOW and that way I know the cord would be the last one I ever purchase. So for me, the STW cord is 2-stars and the value is 4-star because the price is a little steep for this type of cord. Also, the male prongs bend very easily. Do not drop the end on the ground, even from just a couple of feet as the prongs will bend. Another strike.

Technically, the cord is weatherproof and will serve my needs just fine. It is CSA approved for outdoor use. The cord is highly flexible and the grip handles are so easy to work with. Really like that part. The carrying handle is also a plus. For me, I just know that I have to go easy on the cord for fear of damaging it, and if I do that, I have no doubt the cord will last.

So overall, it's a 4-star value and 2-star quality. 3-stars.

Great Cord and Great Price

I got an email from Camping World telling me about a sale on these extension cords. I looked at their site and they wanted about $140. I really needed the cord and almost ordered from them, but I checked Amazon first. Surprise: It was lots cheaper here. Yay. Deal done.

This is a great cord. My stock 50A power cord that came with my fifth wheel is too short to reach to my house and plug in and charge my coach batteries. I've used other extension cords, but they sometimes get hot--especially if I don't completely uncoil them. So now I use this Camco extension to reach the outlet in my garage. Even though the garage outlet is only a 20A breaker, it's still a more efficient charge and safer connection to use the stock cord, plus this extension, plus the dog-bone adapter to reduce down to the 110 outlet. The connections are clean and I get the best charge I can possibly get from that outlet. As long as I don't run the air conditioner or any other heavy appliances, I won't trip the breaker in the house panel.

This cord is constructed well. The ends are good and easy to plug/unplug. The Velcro carrying handle is a big help too. Well done.

While the official line is to not use any extension cord with the Tesla UMC/EVSE for charging the Model S, I'm concerned that there will be a time that the 18' cord just won't be long enough. This is a very well made, heavy duty (6 gauge) extension cord, the handles are convenient and it works perfectly well with no warning alerts or anything of that sort when used on the Model S. Can pull a full 40amps continuous without overheating or any warnings.

Will be a great backup when traveling.

It is very heavy, as you might expect.

I took this extension cord on a nearly 6,000 mile road trip in my 2015 Tesla Model S 85D and this extension cord enabled me to easily reach 240 volt outlets at the 4 friends/families homes we stayed at to charge our car overnight. I used NEMA 10-30 and 14-30 adapters on the end to be able charge from dryer outlets, and just used the extension cord as is to charge from NEMA 14-50 outlets. It is heavy and bulky, but it fits easily into the frunk and we could fit many other things still in the frunk with it. Totally worth buying and having to greatly expand the charging possibilities. This 30 foot cord along with the gen 1 mobile connector the Tesla came with which is 20 feet long means we can reach outlets up to 50 feet away! We've never needed that, but we have parked out in the driveway of the home before and this cord enables us to reach through the garage and into the laundry room of the home. The biggest inconvenience is that the cord is real thick and it forces any doorways to remain open by an inch while charging but that's not the cord's fault. As far as extension cords go this cord is quite expensive, but considering how heavy duty it is I think the price is worth it. I was never able to charge at the full 40 amps this cord is capable of due to the circuits I was plugging into all being 30 amps. Charging at 24 amps overnight and this cord was still cold, but that's not saying much.

Great to extend your EV charger (or other load) up to 40 Amps continuous

Checked Continuity: all continuous where required, all 0 where required.
After unraveling, measuring, re-winding, re-extending, and plugging-in, checked voltage at female end and was within 99.9% of voltage measure at outlet. Started with 10 amp load for 20 minutes (5 amp increments every 20 minutes), up to 34 amp load, with no detectable (by hand) increase in temperature on either the cord itself, or on the plug-ends. (load cords were very much the only part of the system that I could detect a temperature change, and it was consistent plugged into the outlet or the extension cord)

Then, utilizing 1 inch rubber lined steel suspension clamps, I routed the cord from my outlet near the breaker box, to where it is easily accessible for use by my EV Charger.

While NOT the most desired recommendation of use by an electrician, it keeps the cord off the ground, well supported, with little chance of damage. This is working great for central access to the vehicles for charging purposes.

Looking at the calculated acceptable loads for this setup (6 AWG copper, under 60 feet including EV charger, extension cord and distance from outlet to breaker box), easily able to handle a 40 amp continuous load at 240V.

The carrying strap seems adequate for light use to move it around.

The cord feels solid overall, but my application is fairly static, so cannot attest to longevity if constantly rolling-up and moving it around.

If you need an outlet further than it is currently located, and want (or need) an option significantly less than what an electrician would charge to route, this seems to be a good option as long as you understand that it is NOT recommended for permanent usage.

Works Great for Charging a Tesla

This thing is HEAVY DUTY. When it arrived and I realized how heavy the box was, I knew I had purchased the cord for the job. I was able to charge a Tesla Model S at 240 volts / 40 amps (adding 30 miles of range per hour) while plugged into a NEMA 14-50 outlet with no problem. The Camco cord and plugs stay completely cool to the touch during charging.

Definitely recommend if you're looking for a cord for charging a Tesla. I only wish they offered lengths shorter than 30', as I really only needed less than 10 feet. Still, I ordered this one to be safe, and have not been disappointed.

We use this cord as the main power cord everywhere we plug in the RV. We leave the factory plug in the RV and use this so that it is easier to keep the electrical bay clean as we can wipe this off outside and roll it up away from the RV and then put this inside the compartment. We have had to use the old one we had several times when there were pedestal problem at our campsite, so instead of moving the rig they let us plug into the next space over as it was not rented for the rest of our stay. Unfortunately, our old cord seems to be lost at the RV repair shop, so we replaced it with this one.

Needed this extension cord to get to my Tesla, which is parked about 40 feet from the outlet. The distance causes a great deal of energy loss. Normally from a 220 outlet to my car would charge 38 to 40 miles an hour. With the extension cord completely stretched out, I get about 25 miles an hour. Better than 4 miles an hour from a 110 outlet, but still a big loss in charging time.

The cable is heavy and hard to wind up, but it is very useful and fits perfectly in the frunk of my Tesla. Still a very could accessory for the car to get charged.
