Second one purchased. Will be replacing both after being told they are not waterproof nor water resistant. Camco immediately blamed most likely water as a reason I had an almost full meltdown. Sounds like an easy way to get out of any warranty claims.
Receptacle was completely sealed and sheltered but maybe rain got in but I have doubts about that. I won’t be using these anymore. Fire hazard. Thankfully breaker tripped.

I had a no-name receptacle for about a year. In moving cords and such, I noticed it was in bad shape. The plug it was mated to was fine, cleaned up to look like new. One of the contacts in the receptacle was basically incinerated, and it was just a matter of time before it lost contact or caught fire. I looked back at my order for that one and it cost roughly half what the Camco unit cost. I ordered the Camco unit (thank goodness for prime shipping!) and was pleased to see that the contacts were much heavier copper than the prior part. I guess I saved too much money on the first item. The Camco looks like it will manage 50 amps, the earlier thing would have no chance. (my peak load is more like 35 amps, and that was apparently too much)

5 stars for a receptacle that will pull the current it's rated for. It's working out there right now, no issues.

I have a 14-50 extension cord and for that past month, I've been seeing very intermittent "ground loss" errors reported by my EVSE using the extension. I narrowed it down to the female connector on the extension cable as the likely culprit of my problem. Instead of going through the hassle of returning a really heavy extension cord through the mail, it was recommended I try replacing the female connector on it. I gravitated toward this connector because the strain relief screw holes have metal threading to grab onto instead of directly grabbing onto the plastic. Also, the strain relief clamp has an optional two sided "insert" you can put in the slot to accommodate smaller wire bundles. Or, if you have a really thick wire bundle (like around the 1" mark), you can remove this "insert" completely to use the full diameter of the hole on the bottom of the connector. This was also nice touch.

First thing I noticed when opening the package was how "light" and "plasticky" the socket felt. I was expecting/hoping for a more hefty rubber feeling, like the 14-50 female socket it would be replacing. Something this, dare I say, "flimsy feeling", I'd expect to cost less than $10. But since I'm not going to be plugging in and unplugging stuff into it very often, I shouldn't have much to worry about.

Opening up the connector housing was really easy. First remove the two long strain relief screws, then remove two short screws from the back and one short screw from the front. Just to note, unlike the strain relief screws, the latter 3 screws mentioned all screw into the plastic shell, which shouldn't be as big of a deal as if the strain relief was also screwed into plastic, but it would have been nice if they also had metal threading in the screw holes.

After opening the housing, the female receptacles for each individual prong of the 14-50 outlet can be removed and reinserted individually from the housing which can help with connecting the individual wire leads. The instructions and recommended lengths to strip each wire was relatively accurate, but I also eyeball measured them to try and get the stripping more exact. This part was a lot easier than I expected though, probably because the 6AWG wire I was working with has very thin strands so it was pretty easy to bend and run each lead to their corresponding female receptacle inside the connector. If you have the 6/3 Romex with really thick individual strands within each lead, be prepared with a pair of pliers in hand to help you bend it, especially for the neutral wire since it runs along the left edge of the connector housing and bends 180 degrees to reach to top most receptacle inside the connector from the top. One more thing to note is the ground wire receptacle is the closest one to the opening where the wire bundle comes into the connector. This means it will be the shortest one so if you have a bare ground wire, it should have very little to no chance of shorting with another wire.

Each wire lead connects to its respective receptacle with a screw which is nice and secure for the most part. However, since the 6AWG wire I'm using is made up of very thin strands, it wasn't ideal because each receptacle does not have a "plate" that the receptacle screw pushes down on to clamp the wire; the screw itself is directly screwed into the wire to clamp it down. Granted the bottom of the screw is flat so it kind of acts like a "plate", but it was not ideal for the thin strands of the 6AWG wire I was working with as it caused it to fray quite a bit. In the end though, is was secure enough and the total surface area contact between the wire strands and the receptacle was enough to not worry too much. Wires made of thicker strands probably would fair better though.

Overall, this product works very well for my needs. So far I haven't seen the "ground loss" error reported by my EVSE, but I will wait another week or two to make that final determination since the problem was so intermittent. I'm going to dock 1 star though since I really believe something that costs around ~$15 should be of less "plasticky" quality, plus it would have been better if each prong receptacle had a flat "plate" to help secure the wires being screwed into it.

Good for Replacing a Bad Socket or Making Your Own Extension Cord

Since not every RV hookup opportunity is at a conventional campground I have made my own extension cables using these Camco receptacles. For my hookup at home I had a 30-amp 240 dryer outlet in my garage. Although my motorhome has a 50-amp plug, its power consumption never exceeded the capacity of that socket which was protected by a 30-amp breaker. Buying sufficient 10/4 rubber-covered wire from a big box building supply store, I was able to assemble a power supply cable to extend from my garage outlet to my coach. More recently I needed to park my coach on my new home's construction site which has a temporary power pole. After I had the electrical contractor install a 30-amp 4-prong twist-lock outlet on the power pole, I used one of these sockets and some 10/4 rubber-covered wire to hook up my motorhome to power there. These plastic connectors are not waterproof, so if they will be exposed to the elements, I tape them inside a plastic bag to keep them dry.

I had a 6/4 SO cable that just needed two ends to be a 50 foot extension for an RV hookup. This and the corresponding mate were perfect for the task. This isn't industrial strength or anything, but value-wise it was right on target. You can pay five or six times more for a much higher quality end that will withstand much more abuse and probably last forever, but I don't think I would ever even work my way through three of these.

I have dealt with electrical problem and receptacle and made drop cords for RVs it is not particularly weatherproof unless you are playing 3M‘s rubber light tape number 33 3M tape By following those instructions it will become fairly waterproof also to compact where the Esso number six goes into the mail and female receptacles before you put the rubber tape and then wrap with the 33 the old fashion duck seal don’t laugh it still works

Cameo to rescue when charging an EV

I bought a Cameo 18 inch "dogbone" adapter (TT-30 Male to TT-50 Female) with this same type of receptacle on one end, which I cut off and replaced with this unit. I had to do this to make an RV Park power cord adapter with internal AC wiring connections suitable to plug in an EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment). The EVSE I am using operates at either 125 or 250Vac up to 50A. However, in the absence of an available TT-50 receptacle power source in an RV Park, I wanted to have a backup capability to plug in my EVSE to a TT-30 outlet. In this case, the power source would be 125V source up to 30A, instead of 250V up to 50A. Nevertheless, this combination of Cameo products is perfect for that situation and still recharges my EV a lot faster than by only plugging in to a standard (household) 115Vac (15A) outlet.
