Bottom line: This newer model was clearly a response to these issues found in the original model, and I love the changes they've made. It also doesn't seem to leak as much as my older Chutes did. Always nice to see well-thought-out design improvements that are clearly based on customers' responses.
I thought this new Chute Mag would be the same bottle but with improved so you did not have to hold the cap while tilting the bottle super high. I was WRONG! The cap is nearly impossible and very burdensome to open with one hand. It is more slippery and take about 3 times the number of turns as the previous bottle but even after accomplishing the difficult task of unscrewing, lifting off the cap to open with one hand is nearly impossible. This discourages water consumption while working or during activities. Once finally open (with two hand and much more effort) the magnet does work as advertised, but I do not see the point. If you were going to use two hands, the old bottle is still better as you could simply keep the cap back with your other hand. I will be returning this bottle and ordering more of the older bottle and hoping Camelbak does not discontinue!
Now the issue of the new cap. The plastic is still solid, and it doesn't leak, but there have been some regressions. First, the retaining piece for the cap onto the bottle has been removed. Some might say that's a positive as it increased the profile of the bottle. I didn't mind it. The new magnetic cap feature is useful, but it was never an issue for me in the first place, I just held the bottle so that I could put a finger in front of the cap, so I don't see the utility. The new cap is also deeper and requires more twist to unlock, so it ends up being more difficult to use.
My score is based on what it is, and how I believe that it's a regression from the previous version. Another issue that I can't knock the score for is philosophy of use.
My girlfriend recently got a Thermos water bottle. While it's only 24oz compared to this bottle's 32oz, and seems to be a little flimsier; it fits in a cup holder, has fill gradiations, even has a feature for keeping track of how many bottles you've gone through, and has a spring loaded and lockable cap.
So it comes down to how you use these bottle. This product is sturdy and simple, good for hikers who aren't going to be out all day and would be better suited with a bladder. But it seems less than ideal for someone who just needs a water bottle for daily hydration.
I also love that Camelbak water bottles don’t have a weird smell or make water taste plastic-y.
I have yet to drop the water bottle but it appears to be durable enough not to break if it “took a spill” so to speak.
Overall, this is an excellent every day water bottle.
Top international reviews
I am a fan of the Chute bottle and I have owned the one I have with the tether for over 6 years and it still surviving being dropped and heavy use on a daily basis.
The only concern I have for this new style bottle is that Camelbak have introduced rubber seals to both the large opening and the small cap that your unscrew. I am never a fan of removable rubber seal and I have had these seals in water bottle before and eventually they become nasty and horrible, even with regular cleaning. I had read that somewhere people had experienced leaking with the old style Chute bottle, however I have two and neither have leaked without the rubber seal???? Personally if Camelbak were going to introduce a rubber seal I would have much preferred to see a permanent seal that is integrated into head of the bottle, both for hygiene and ease of cleaning. Basically a seal that is part of the bottle without any gaps. These removable seals in the bottle trap water, juice, etc which is not great. Also Camelback have removed the the rubber on the inside of the bottle holding lope and it is now just hard plastic, which could make for carrying a heavy bottle uncomfortable. To top it all off the single turn that meant you could get quick access to your drink is now replaced with a full on screw cap, I am not longer able to open this bottle single handed. Also the magnetic cap is a great idea but the hinge looks to me rather flimsy, so only time will tell on if this lasts.
It is still the same solid well made bottle but the cap on the bottle sounds good in theory and certainly the magnetic part is a good idea although the cap on the tether from the previous model never bothered me like it has bothered some folk. I hate cleaning water bottles and the chute by far has always been the easiest one I have to clean, with these new rubber seals it has now become as painful as the rest. Some minor improvements but in a bid to try and solve the alleged issues Camelbak have potentially created a whole new set of issues in the process.
Still on the fence with the new design but it is still one of my favourite water bottles.
Seems to be extremely hard wearing, and very easy to clean.
Also, there are two rubber seals, these will degrade over time causing the flask to leak.
I love the new MagSafe storage, it’s much easier than the old style of tether, and yes I’m sure there are those that will find something they don’t like.
These bottles are really strong, I have never had one leak at all, as long as you close them properly!
What’s not to like, they’re strong, leak proof, you get a choice of colours and sizes, they’re washable, constantly reusable so they reduce practice usage, they can be sterilised (unlike steel ) and it’s backed by Camelbaks warranty.
Highly recommended from me, my whole family use them.
It is of very high quality, feels rugged and sturdy. I don't feel like this is going to break or puncture any time soon even being lobbed in my bag with a variety of things (rugby boots etc).
The twist cap is nice and robust and also features a magnet to hold the cap out of your way whilst you're drinking which is a very neat solution.
There was no chemical taste at all, the bottle is of a good size (1 litre) and the bit you drink out of is nice and wide so water flows through nice and easily.
5* product in my opinion
1. It won't fit in a cup holder. Most people buying a water container this large shouldn't expect it to.
2. It won't fit the top rack of your dishwasher. This one makes less sense, if you don't care about the width of the bottle fitting into a standard cup holder, why not make the height low enough that you can fit it into the dishwasher.
3. It won't fit into your water cooler. Even with the top off the bottle, it won't fit under a standard water cool dispenser, you'll need to angle it under the cooler and work on your wrist strength to fill it at work (it also won't fit under a bathroom sink faucet).
4. The mouth of the bottle is 2". Just too small to use a canning funnel. So if you're the type of person who uses funnels for protein powder/smoothies, etc. the top can only fit a standard funnel. If they'd made it even a 1/10" wider it would have worked perfectly. I assume all of their mag tops are a standard width across all their products though.
5. It has a raised bottom, like a wine bottle. Only really applicable again to people who are using the bottle for something other than water, but the bottom of the bottle isn't flat, so protein powder, pulp, etc. will get stuck in the artificial ridges there.
6. You can't tell if the top is sealed. The new mag top is designed in such a way that you can't visually tell if the top is closed. It sits flush with the top even if it's not secure. You have to manually check that the cap has been turned completely on the threads, otherwise it will leak out - a lot, it will spill everywhere.
7. No measurement markings. There is one mark for 1,500ml on the bottle, though I'm not sure if it's marking the 1,500ml mark, or just the overall capacity. If that does mark the 1,500ml mark, it wouldn't have cost them anything to also print 250,500,750,1000 indicators, but they didn't.
Overall, if you're just looking for a big water bottle - this will do that job though you can probably find significantly cheaper alternatives of the same quality. If you're considering using this bottle as a gym bottle, or for shakes or protein mixes, I'd skip it - they unfortunately did not have this use in mind, and the way it was designed will actively frustrate you.
I have to say all those annoying feature on previous comeback chute bottle were fixed on Camelback Chute Mag. The cap is no longer wawing beside your nose. It's super easy to attach cap on the magnet.
Also, there is no struggle to take off the full cap, or the smaller cap.
The drinking neck feels good when you drink from it and the handle is no longer that narrow gap as in the Camelback Chute, where you could put just one your finger, which will be cut off by the handle. Camelback Chute Mag has a proper handle conveniently carry your bottle in the hand.
Great improvements from Camelback. In my opinion Camelback Mag is on of the best water bottles for hiking in the market.
Overall I am very happy with this investment
I have tried various personal water filter bottles but they all make a noise. I have therefore gone back to having a large capacity water filter jug in the kitchen and fill up from that. Of course, if out all day then the second filling would have to be ordinary tap water.
Large mouth piece so you can get a good drink on when your thirsty. The magnetized top only seems to be there to stop it hitting you in the face when your having a drink.
No plasticy tastes a generally good all rounder bottle made out of pretty solid materials.
