The product has two down sides. The threads are a major point of possible contamination. You are getting contaminated water on them, purifying INSIDE the bottle, pulling the lid off of the threads, and changing lids. You're then supposed to drink off the unpurified threads. The instructions are very clear about drying them between all the steps, but it's still a less than perfect method.
Second issue is the means itself. It's a heavy electronic cap. Being electronic it has the regular points of failure other electronics have (battery dies, bulb breaks, etc.) These aren't really a big deal for most people. If your concerned about battery you can carry a solar panel. As I mentioned before, it's not a feather weight either (having batteries, buttons, etc.)
If you're going ultra-light you'll be disappointed. If you don't mind a little extra weigh for some quick and easy filtered water, this does a good job. As I said I've used it many times and never gotten sick. I wouldn't use it on really nasty water, but stream water you're more than likely going to be totally fine. I'd recommend it.
3/30/15 Update: While I haven't used or charged this UV lamp for at least a half year, it is still holding a full charge in the rechargeable battery. Now THAT is an impressive "shelf time," IMO...
