Mold where it can't be cleaned

We got a couple of these and were initially happy with them, but after a half a dozen uses the inside tubing in the mouthpieces became moldy in a way that's nearly impossible to clean. I suspect it's a defect in the way ours were put together as there'd never be so many positive reviews if this were common, but I've had to throw ours out.

There's a silicone (?) flexible tube that connects the sipper-part on top to the underside of the lid; it makes the tunnel that water passes through when you drink. It looks like the silicon piece is supposed to make a water-tight seal with the plastic lid, allowing water to flow and the inside of the tube to be cleaned. The outside diameter of the tube should stay 100% dry (and so woudn't need cleaning). In ours, mildew formed outside of the tube. A skinny bottle-brush cleans inside the tube, but the lid has to be disassembled (in a way that customers clearly aren't supposed to have to do) to clean outside of the tube. I got it out with a needle-nose pliers and some pulling and tugging and it cleaned right up, but getting it back in is nearly impossible and not something I've got time to do regularly.

Unfortunate Mold Carrier

At first, I loved this water bottle. It takes a bit to get used to drinking from it without tipping the bottle too much, but it holds a lot of water and is generally well made. However, it is incredibly difficult to clean the rubber nipple for drinking, particularly without a dishwasher. Mold seems to have grown in mine, and I could only get it out with the use of a q-tip and soap. I've boiled it, I've tried cleaning it regularly, but it always comes back.
For those without a dishwasher, stick with hard plastic or metal.

Moldy mouthpiece. Seal issues in the wrong places.

This is my 2nd Eddy. The first one had the mouthpiece break off, due to needing to remove it weekly to clean.

Let's start there: mold grows in the mouthpiece and you need to clean it at least weekly. It's gross. You can taste it. I don't even want to know the health implications. This is my #1 issue with this water bottle, despite being my every day water bottle.

My original Eddy leaked between the bottle and the head, constantly. My 2nd bottle doesn't have that problem.

However, the mouthpiece leaks HEAVILY after airplane takeoff. BE CAREFUL flying with this waterbottle containing ANY water; you may end up with a lap full of water.

My final complaint: When screwing the lid on, you have the push the straw askew or else it will line up with the dimple on the bottle just so perfectly as it creates a seal and nothing can be sucked threw the straw. Yarly. I know this isn't a single defect; my boyfriend's Eddy also has this problem. It's kind of the worst. If only the lid sealed as well as the straw sealed with the inside bottom of the bottle.

Great except for 1 flaw...

When I was pregnant I was on the look-out for a water bottle I could have beside my bed and drink out of without having to get up.
I wanted some that was :
1. Spill-Proof (mostly)
2. Able to drink from lying down
3. Made from material that did not cause me concern.

I found it in the CamelBak and it was a lifesaver for me during pregnancy and early motherhood.

I've found one drawback: The Mouthpiece is a haven for mold. Yuck!
I only use water in this bottle, but almost every third day I have to clean out mold. (see photo)
The mouthpiece holds water whenever you stop drinking and therefore the ledges within are a great place for mold to grow.

This wouldn't prevent me from buying again, but it's a concern that need to be addressed.

FUNGUS and BLACK MOLD. This water bottle begins to leak and trap bacteria in the rubber tubing between the straw and the mouth piece. Cleaning with white vinegar, a pipe cleaner and running through the dishwasher didn't stop the prolific growth of mold. I own the Contigo Brand of this same style of water bottle and NEVER had a problem like this. I became extremely ill and kept drinking water from the CamelBak Eddy Water Bottle and a friend noticed black floaties in the water. She took the bottle apart and couldn't figure out what it was. I had constant vertigo and nausea for about a week. Even though I had washed the bottle daily, the black mold was trapped in this hidden rubber valve. My friend pulled the rubber tubing valve out and saw that it was still moldy even after cleaning. I threw this bottle out. Within two days my vertigo and nausea went away. I had been sick like that for about three weeks and it was getting worse. I haven't been sick at all since discarding this bottle and using only my Contigo bottles.

Good but flawed.

I love this water bottle. You don't realize how convenient that loop on the top of the bottle is until your hands are full and you can carry your water bottle with one finger. The materials are obviously high quality and I couldn't be happier with it. Well done, CamelBak.

UPDATE: Had to downgrade my review to 3 stars. As much as I love the design of the bottle in general, it's a serious design flaw that the rubber nozzle is made of such a porous material. I cleaned it with dish soap and have not been able to get the taste of soap out for days. I've tried cleaning it with warm water and baking soda and lemon juice, warm water and vinegar, nothing worked! Now it just tasted like dish soap and lemon juice. Customer service was very good about it and send me out a new lid, which is why I still give it 3 stars. Basically, just clean it with hot water, don't use anything else. And don't even think about drinking anything out of there other than plain water.

Filled it up with water at work and took a drink and water leaked down the front of my dress shirt. Last time I used it. I was working a lot so I forgot to return it so I'll just use it at home exercising or gardening. The ladies I work with have them and theirs work fine. I must of got a bad one. If it wouldn't have leaked on me I would have given it 5 stars.

I bought this in 2012. Definitely changed the way I drink during the day. Once it was a few cups of coffee in the morning and then nothing else really for the rest of the day. I bought the Eddy and that's not changed everything. I drink far more water, which I know is good, I feel better because I'm not dehydrated.

Water does not taste funny in this bottle.

Only small point i'd have to make is that you cant get quite as much water volume from it per mouthful, you have to suck and suck, while biting at the same time.

I'm 3 years into using this bottle and I have never had to change the bite-cap where the water comes out. Its still ok in that there are no splits and no discoloration. What has happened recently is that the temperature difference between the water and the room is causing water to rise out of the mouth piece and spill out. There must be an issue within the value within the top/lid, which is causing this as it has never happened before.

I love these bottles. First came across them whilst in Germany. I use them for the gym, hiking and for work. The bottles are very light but very durable. The caps can be a bit fragile (but any fractures are normally down to me dropping them on the car-park floor). The bottles are very easy to wash and do not taint (so no faint juice concentrate taste when you have water only). The straw and mouthpiece are proving just as dependable and robust. The mouth pieces can be replaced if you require. I take this bottle everywhere in my day-sack. I doubt I will every purchase from another brand now.

The bottle is well constructed and of nice quality. I have been using one of the brita drinks bottles up to now but the straw system was rubbish and if you used it without the straw system you could get wet when you tipped it up !! With this new bottle no such problem the mouth piece is non drip, you have to bite the end of it to open it to be able to drink, it might sound awkward but certainly it is not and now no need to tip the bottle up to drink from it, when not in use you can lock the mouth piece down so there is no fear of it leaking. Therefore I happily give this bottle a 5 star review.

This bottle is great. Firstly, its a hard bottle, I expected it to be soft like other sports bottles but when it arrived I was pleasantly surprised with the quality and toughness - this isn't going to get crushed in your bag!

If you have used a CamelBak before you must be used to the bite-to-release drinking spout and it works perfectly on this bottle.

I bought the 750ml version and it keeps me going for an hour in the spinning studio no problem! I look forward to trying it out on hikes in the summer!
