The product has two down sides. The threads are a major point of possible contamination. You are getting contaminated water on them, purifying INSIDE the bottle, pulling the lid off of the threads, and changing lids. You're then supposed to drink off the unpurified threads. The instructions are very clear about drying them between all the steps, but it's still a less than perfect method.
Second issue is the means itself. It's a heavy electronic cap. Being electronic it has the regular points of failure other electronics have (battery dies, bulb breaks, etc.) These aren't really a big deal for most people. If your concerned about battery you can carry a solar panel. As I mentioned before, it's not a feather weight either (having batteries, buttons, etc.)
If you're going ultra-light you'll be disappointed. If you don't mind a little extra weigh for some quick and easy filtered water, this does a good job. As I said I've used it many times and never gotten sick. I wouldn't use it on really nasty water, but stream water you're more than likely going to be totally fine. I'd recommend it.
I also ordered the CamelBak Chute Water Bottle Cap to replace the solid cap that comes with this kit. The stainless steel bottle and chute cap are available here on Amazon.com as well.
The Purifier can be used many time before needing to be recharged.
The Purifier kit with case and cable (not the bottle and cap) weigh about 10 ounces, so if you are counting ounces for your backpacking trip keep this in mind. You may find other methods to disinfect your water which weigh less, but I like having an non-chemical or non-filter option, which have ongoing costs associated with them. Of course you could just boil your water over a fire you fuel with local materials...but using this Purifier is more convenient. I originally purchase this CamelBak UV Purifier for traveling in Southeast Asia so that I could purify any questionable sources of water and keep from having to buy filtered water in plastic bottle that I had to dispose of. Also, placing your utensils in the bottle, filling it with water, and running the UV purifier could disinfect the utensils that are provided by street vendors where they either have a limited water supply for washing their utensils or are using river water for cleaning. Keep in mind that this is not an approved use of this Purifier and not recommend by CamelBak, but I'm sure it will work for such and application. Of course you could just carry your own set of utensils with you, which would be easier still.
By the way, it's advisable to not consume the ice in many countries around the world. I had asked CamelBak's customer service whether this Purifier would disinfect clear ice placed in the bottle (with or without) water and their answer was that it would not and was not intended for this purpose. I did find one scientific study paper on the web where UV light was used to disinfect solid ice and it did work in that study, but there is no proof at this point that placing ice in your CamelBak Purifier would be effective.
Keep this in mind... According to the instructions provided with the CamelBak Purifier, the UV bulb had a life-cyle of 10,000 uses (166.66 hours). You will receive an 'End of Life' alert on the display when the 10,000 use counter has been reach and the Purifier will stop working and need to be replaced. But, this is a very long time and it should last you for years before it is not longer usable. The instructions also indicate that a replacement battery may be available from www.camelbak.com as well as testing and additional information. You may not want to rely on this Purifier solely if you think you may be approaching the end of the bulb life or have a weak battery that won't hold a charge for very long. This is my second CamelBak Purifier and I've never had to deal with either issue so far. I'm not sure if CamelBak will replace the UV lamp and reset the counter if it is sent to them for service.
The purifier can be recharged from any USB charging source. It does not come with it's own wall adapter, but you could use a power-bank battery pack or portable solar charging panel while backpacking, should you ever deplete the battery on a single outing. The purifier comes with a mini-USB charging cable which is not the micro-USB size connector that is currently used for most phones. I was not able to find how many cycle could be run on a fresh charge, and I'm presuming that it depends on the ambient temperature of the battery in the purifier. I believe more specifications can be found at the CamelBak website for average use cycle. One other alternative charge source for this while camping is the 'BioLite Camp Stove' which provides USB power produced from wood sticks and other flammable bio-maters. This item is sold on Amazon.com as well. Just search on 'BioLite Camp Stove'. This CamelBak Purifier along with the BioLite Camp Stove would be a good overall solution while backpacking if overall minimal weight of the two products is not an issue for you. BioLite CampStove 1 Bundle with Original CampStove 1, Portable Grill and KettlePot Attachments and USB FlexLight
I've been satisfied with all of my CamelBak products I've purchased to date. I hope CamelBak keeps production this product, as it does have an eventual bulb life-cycle. Check suppliers for the best price, as it changes regularly and is available from a number of different suppliers.
Hope this information helps others...
The blue color is really neat- looks like it is glowing- very stylish. I also brought a backpack here and this is great because the cap has a little 'loop' handle and i can weave my backpack straps through it so it can't fall out of the side-pocket.
**Added benefit- the UV filtering cap fits on a number of other jugs- nalgene and a few other brands that I tried. So you can bring a few and inter-change them with the UV technology.
**comes with second cap that is non-UV so that you can sanitize and then have a more portable jug to carry after if you swap the caps.
the uv filter comes with a cord and a nice little pouch to carry it too.
