5.0 out of 5 stars Le meilleur de la catégorie
Reviewed in France 🇫🇷 on February 16, 2021

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Little Change From The TG-5 But The Current Best Choice For A Tough Camera

Note: I bought my one, it was not a free sample.

Just back from a Red Sea trip where I used this underwater in the case of the previous model.

The new preset underwater modes for shallow, medium and deep were useless (everything was always too blue) so just as before for excellent results manual white balance is required at every depth you are shooting (it lets you save four) and the results were pretty good using natural light.

Like the TG-5 battery charging in the camera is very slow taking up to 3 hours and it would seem the optional external charger is no better.

Again like the old model it only has Micro USB

Other than the resolution of the LCD screen telling the two models apart is very tricky.

The camera has a lot of advanced features and by default it does not give you the highest JPEG image quality (as was the case with the TG-5) and LSF (Large Super Fine) has to be enabled (see the full manual which can be downloaded for details on LSF and all the other features).

Don't also forget if using it in the water just a human hair on the door seals are enough to cause flooding so follow the instructions carefully re product care and rinsing (especially under the ring around the lens).

P.S. I also had the Nikon W300 with me and this one is a clear winner and I would advise buying a screen protector for only a few pounds plus of course a descent quality SD Card especially if you intend to record 4K videos.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't believe the hype

I bought this camera to take on my 'once in a lifetime' trip to the Maldives.. So glad I had a chance to test it out properly before I left as it would have been a disaster.....

After reading a lots of 5* glowing reviews, I bought this camera partly because of its ability to shoot underwater and partly due to its 'go anywhere' tough exterior. It was going to be my daily point and shoot that I could take anywhere on the trip (including snorkelling) without worry about it getting wet or sandy.

Stills:
The f2 lens was supposed to give this camera the edge in low light conditions but it failed miserably producing grainy, poorly focused pictures. The auto scene select chose repeatedly not to use the flash so I had to manually switch it on to avoid camera shake from the slow shutter speed it was attempting to use to account for the low light. Anything without the flash also came out with a strong yellow cast in subdued lighting conditions.

In bright daylight it faired better and the images were crisp but not as good as my iPhone XR.

I took 10 panoramas (one is attached) and they all had a glitch halfway across the image where the software was failing to correctly align them.

Video:
The 4x zoom is incredibly noisy (you will hear it in all of your footage) and the focus is slow, even outside in good daylight it struggled to work, re-focusing a number of times before settling a little off.

General:
The dual clasp to close and lock the battery compartment is very small and difficult to open. The USB charging port is too close to the door so it's tricky to get the charging lead in.

I never got as far as taking this underwater but given how badly it performed in my kitchen with reasonable indoor light I had enough doubts to return this. Thankfully Amazon was brilliant as always and collected it the next day for a full refund (pending).

As for the trip, I'm going to either just use my iPhone XR or an old SONY HX5 as they both give far better performance. For the underwater photos / video I have ordered the GoPro Hero 8 which was £100 cheaper than this camera - let's hope that lives up to its reputation!
