The invaluable handbook for acing your on-camera appearance
On-Camera Coach is your personal coach for becoming great on camera. From Skype interviews and virtual conferences to shareholder presentations and television appearances, this book shows you how to master the art of on-camera presentation to deliver your message clearly, effectively, and with confidence. Fear of public speaking is common, but even the most seasoned speakers freeze in front of a single lens—being on camera demands an entirely new set of skills above and beyond the usual presentation to an audience you can actually see. It requires special attention to the way you move, the way you speak, and even the way you dress. This book provides the guidance and tools you need to ace it every time.
Video is powerful, and it is everywhere; corporate YouTube channels, webinars, virtual meetings, TedTalks, and more are increasingly turning the lens on those who typically remain behind the scenes. This relatively recent trend will continue to expand as media plays a larger role in business, and the ability to appear confident, authoritative, and polished is becoming a necessary job skill. This book shows you everything you need to know about being on camera, from preparation through presentation and beyond.
- Learn how to prepare for an on-camera appearance
- Tailor your presentation to on-camera demands
- Discover how the camera interprets wardrobe and body language
- Appear dynamic, confident, and engaged when the lens points your way
The lens captures everything—the awkward pauses, the nervous fidgets, poor posture, and every false start and mistake is captured for posterity. Is that the image you want to present? You want to get your message across and be heard; to do that, you must portray authority, energy, and confidence—even when you don't feel it. On-Camera Coach provides the expert instruction and insider secrets that help you make your message sing.

Editorial Reviews
From the Author
It's never been easier to leverage video across the corporate land-scape to reach both internal and external audiences. Cameras areno longer con ned to studios or designated videoconference rooms;they're on our phones, our laptops, and our tablets. A face-to-facemeeting with a client on the other side of the world may require onlya video chat app and a strong Wi-Fi network.
But speaking to a camera is not like speaking to a roomful of peo-ple you can actually see. It requires an entirely different skill set--onemost people don't innately possess. This book aims to take the mysteryout of communicating through the camera and provide speci c tipsand techniques that can make your message sing--and you, the mes-senger, feel con dent in a job well done.
From the Inside Flap
The camera captures and exaggerates all awkward pauses, fidgets, and nervous ticks--and every oddity is recorded for posterity. A poor performance can broadcast the wrong message about you, your intentions, and your organization. If professional entertainers need coaching to come across well on video, is it any wonder that a business professional, even one with years of public speaking experience, would too?
That's where On-Camera Coach comes in. Whether you're preparing to speak before shareholders or employees, appear in a marketing video, take part in an on-air interview, or even give a TED Talk, On-Camera Coach arms you with the tools you need to present effectively before a camera.
Karin Reed covers every stage of the successful on-camera performance, from initial preparation and wardrobe selection, to presentation and Q & A. She explores common misconceptions about performing in videos and alerts you to mistakes businesspeople often make when appearing on camera. And she gives you priceless pointers on how to dress, how to stand and sit, what to do with your hands, how to control the pitch of your voice and the rhythms of your speech, where to look and where never to look, and much more.
Whether for Skype interviews or virtual conferences, shareholder presentations, or television appearances, On-Camera Coach walks you through all the steps involved in delivering your message clearly, effectively, and with confidence.

--Andrew Schwab, President, First Flight Venture Center
"Being great at speaking in front of a room doesn't guarantee success on camera. This book reveals many valuable lessons Karin taught me over time when we have worked together. I highly recommend that you read and take heed of her advice before going on camera. You'll considerably improve your performance."
--Bill Franks, Chief Analytics Officer, Teradata, and author of Taming the Big Data Tidal Wave and The Analytics Revolution
--William C. Rawls, Jr., MD, Physician and Co-Founder, Vital Plan
"I am an experienced public speaker, but I was intimidated by the camera, until I had the opportunity to participate in Karin's workshop. She provided practical advice to make me feel good, look good (well, better), and do better in front of the camera. I have so much more confidence that I even look forward to on-camera appearances now! She's both professional and approachable, and that comes through clearly in this book. Having this book is like having a private consultation with Karin before every on-camera experience! I will definitely be keeping a copy at my desk--you should too!"
--Kelly A. McGuire, Vice President, Advanced Analytics, Wyndham Destination Network
"Karin accomplishes what few authors can--she reaches through the pages to personally connect with the reader, turning what might have been a book about on-camera tactics into a supportive and educational conversation. Her insights are simple, direct, and effective. If you're looking for a guide and mentor to mastering on-camera communications, look no further. Karin is the coach we all want in our corner."

Even though I had taken Karin's on-camera performance workshop a few years ago, her book offers new insights and techniques for captivating and connecting with your audience--on camera or in person. I highly recommend it!
