Product Description
Magic Tube Light Magic Tube Light is a portable, dimmable, daylight balanced, continuous LED light source with a removable battery. Created for multiple uses including photography and videography. High CRI (Colour Rendering Index / Colour Rendition Index) – Magic Tube Light has a 90+ CRI rating A simple definition of Colour Rendering Index (CRI) is that a higher CRI light source will reproduce more accurate colours of a subject. The look should be similar to that of the subject in a natural or ideal light source/setting. A more technical definition is that measuring the ability of a light source to accurately render all frequencies of its colour spectrum when compared to a perfect reference light of a similar type (colour temperature). It is rated on a scale from 1-100. The lower the CRI rating, the less accurately colours will be reproduced. Lower CRI ratings may have too much green or magenta in their spectrums. Another note is a low Colour Rendering Index does not mean all colours will shift or be inaccurate when captured, and no two lamps with the same low CRI rating will necessarily have the same errors in rendering. You can have two bulbs with the same wattage, light quantity output and design. However, if they have considerably different CRI's the colours of the subject when the image is captured will look dramatically different from the highlights to the shadows. I will be using this primarily for video shooting and because of the unique shape and size it provides me with options I did not have before. The remote control works well and is much more useful than I though it would be. I really love the design of this light.
Pros:
- It comes with a padded tube case that also has enough room for two extra batteries or charger, but not both at the same time.
- Construction is sturdy and the light output can be adjusted, it has about 8-10 brightness levels.
- The CTO tube that turns the daylight color into incandescent is also very sturdy and seems pretty accurate regarding color temp, perhaps just a little warm.
- The light can be mounted to a light stand or tripod, as it is threaded 1/4-20 on one end.
- User-replaceable battery
- Remote control included
- Daylight balanced, but can be changed to incandescent with included tube.
- Really bright light!
- Very portable
Cons:
- Mine had a loose nut rattling around inside the light. I simply removed the diffuser by loosening a couple screws and put is back on, but with LocTite to prevent it from loosening again.
- Charger is adapted to US outlets from an European version, which makes it a little awkwardly bulky (minor annoyance)
- Wish the controls (on/off & dimmer) were on the opposite side of the tube as I could then face it away from me while I am turning it on and/or adjusting it.
Bottom line:
Really great, bright light with accurate color that costs a fraction of the price of the Ice Light. Unique shape, sturdy design, replaceable battery and come with a case. I am knocking off 1 star for the loose nut that I had to fix, but otherwise a 5 star product. Highly recommended.
PROS
- Includes two common sony batteries that are fast to recharge.
- Includes CTO tube, charger and nice case.
- Super bright and good battery life, much brighter then the original Icelight
- Pretty good quality, does not feel cheap in the hands. Nice metal bottom to screw in.
CONS
- Batteries dies quick if left inside the light, make sure to unscrew and take out before storage for a long time.
- The orange tube is absolutely necessary if using the barn doors also available on Amazon, it DOES NOT fit without the CTO tube attached.
- It is not quick to power up, but has a 'priming' phase that takes about 3 seconds to turn on or off. This was a big deal when I took it to a convention the first weekend I bought it for a bit of fill in dark locations. It did not power quickly enough for candid or hallway shots, so I quickly bagged it and bumped my ISO.
Pictures attached are the first images I shot using this light, just need a set of barn doors that fit this thing and I'm golden!

Pro:
This light certainly does the job, and provides illumination of a face at just under 1M distance at ƒ4 at ISO400. We found it suitable for MS or closer. The colour temperature is stable enough for non-critical grades or if you don't bother grading. Shares sony battery with most of our location equipment. The remote includes shutter trigger for Canon and Nikon! AWESOME.
Cons: Updated
Out of box, the increase brightness switch seldom worked, however, the remote worked reliably for a few minutes.
The brightness at each level indicator is not stable which is not an issue. After a few mins of partially working, both front panel switches stopped working as did the remote (which worked sporadically seemingly with up to over 10seconds delay). Stuck on lowest setting.
Summary: The leader in this LED design is a reliable unit, priced well and everything works out of the box, but for a 5th of that price, this light certainly works, bar the severe quality issues. I would advise against relying completely on a single one of these on location. Personally, as a Shooting PD, I will not be adding this to the armoury, although I was hoping for a cheap, awesome bits of magic… it's not; they really don't exist! Will look at Dedo's or Ice.
