About the Author

Mary Morgan Blackburn Ketchel feels particularly connected to the women’s suffrage movement. She was able to exercise her right to vote for her own mother to become the first woman elected to Congress, and then to the Senate, in her home state of Tennessee. Women gained the hard-fought right to vote just 100 years ago. The suffragists were mothers and daughters who changed history for mothers and daughters. She hopes Camilla Can Vote tells this amazing story to as many little girls as she can reach.

Marsha Blackburn is a member of the United States Senate.

A must have for all history-loving children and parents alike!
5 Stars
A must have for all history-loving children and parents alike!
This book tells an important history lesson for all Americans through the lens of a school girl, Camilla, who becomes transported in time to August 18, 1920 in Nashville, Tennessee. Camilla witnesses the historic vote of Harry T. Burn, a young legislator from East Tennessee whose mother encouraged him to break the 48-48 tie in the Tennessee House of Representatives. This vote allowed Tennessee to become the last of the necessary 36 states to ratify the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, giving women the right to vote. The book is easy to follow, filled with excitement, and beautifully illustrated. A must have for all history-loving children and parents alike!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect book for students to learn about the Women’s Suffrage Movement
Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2020
I am a 4th grade teacher in Atlanta and this book is just perfect for my classroom! I love how the history of the Women’s Suffrage Movement is explained in a fun and exciting way. My students will love how the setting changes from Camilla’s class field trip to the Hermitage Hotel in Nashville in 1920. My students learned about Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton in 3rd grade. This book is perfect for them to read about how wonderful it was for women to finally get the right to vote after seventy-two years of hard work and dedication.
