I found a lot of great ideas in this book. One of the most basic things that I found out is that I am not alone when I throw pillows and rugs and all kinds of soft blankets on the boat. There are a lot of things in the book that are considered luxuries on a camping trip, which is essentially the same as a boat cruise, but campers have to think about weight and space. We have a Pearson 365 so I can put any supplies I want on board. The key is planning.
Now anyone who knows me knows that I think of the Holiday Inn as camping out. The Marriott is better, generally speaking. But I have occasionally been intrigued by the idea of camping. We make reservations at different Marinas through the Parks & Recreations Service. So that’s camping, yes?
I am interested in the idea of camping even though my brother says I have gone too soft for camping or Survivor. He says I could have done it ten years ago. Sometimes, it’s like we haven’t even met. A few years ago, I had a transaction on my credit card declined several times and when I called the Credit Card company, that I shall call Discover from here on out, I was informed that Discover declined the transaction because of camping supplies and…Spam. The Spam was just a joke, for my brother who was a chef on Maui while we lived there because he was coming on the trip. I was going to put it in the oven for him to find. (Now that I think about it, I really should check the oven.)
Camping. Not that hard if you plan well enough.
This book is highly recommended and would make a great gift.
I loved the pictures, they are beautiful full color pictures.
I thought a lot of the recipes were a little advanced or too complicated for camping but then that's because we prepare almost all of our meals from scratch at home so when I go camping I just want to be lazy and eat simple and quick stuff. But some of the recipes look so good that I'll try them at home.
I think it would make a great gift for a kid or someone just getting into camping.
If you're a beginner in the world of camping, this is a lovely book! If you're a veteran to the world of camping, I imagine most of the information in here would be repeat, but there will probably still be some new ideas for you to try.
At least one third of the book is a cookbook, all kinds of recipes and styles, depending on what you bring with you and what you can find (there is a small foraging section). Lots of lovely appetizing foodie pictures, which explains this review's title :)
There are checklists and practical tips, there's even a bingo game and merit badges and a photography challenge. Best to make copies of those sections if you don't want to ruin the book though. The only thing that is removable is a constellation map includes after page #224. It is perforated for easy removal and is the equivalent of four book pages.
