For example, LabourStart initiated a campaign in cooperation with the International Trade Union Confederation to have charges against Egyptian trade unionist Kamal Abbas dropped for "insulting a public officer." Abbas had founded the Centre for Trade Union and Workers' Services as a true workers alternative to the government-run Egyptian Trade Union Federation. Abbas' CTUWS had done considerable organizing work between 2006 and Mubarak's overthrow in 2011 and the government was scared of him. LabourStart ran a substantial campaign getting about 7500 responses from trade unionist all over the world. This resulted in an Egyptian court overturning Abbas' previous sentence.
LabourStart campaigns have supported strikes, fought union busting, helped free prisoners, and broken lock-outs. Some of these campaigns are successful and some are not. Ultimately, however, online campaigns help make international trade unionism increasingly successful by rallying the voices of the world's workers and doing so on an international scale.
Bravo to LabourStart! It is a privilege to have the opportunity to examine and to see discussed fifteen years of online campaigning. As another reviewer has already noted, it's the only book on the topic!
