The Campfire in a can puts out a lot of heat and gives a very nice campfire feel. We have used it for 12 days on two different trips and have come to love it.
With conservative use we were able to get a full 5 days out of a standard bbq grill tank (20lbs) the first trip. Since it was the first trip with it we kept it on medium to low most of the time and high just to try it out in short bursts. We cooked on it at least 3 times the first trip. The grill is not huge but we were able to barely get 4 Rome brand pie irons on it. We toasted marshmallows and made smores with no issues and grilled hot dogs.
Our most recent trip we used it for 7 days. I would put it on medium during the evenings for and hour or two and then on again in the morning for about an hour also on medium. We cooked on it as well at least 3 nights and I made it 4 days on the first tank and switched tanks for the remaining 3 and I would say we have about half a tank left on the second tank.
I had one issue on the first trip and one of the lid clips broke off. I called the company and talked to the owner on his cell as he was on his way to work. He was extremely helpful and took care of the problem immediately.
I have always been a campfire person and would have never considered a propane fire for my predominate campfire choice but I may rethink my stance on that.
Propane is cheaper than the cost of wood at most of the places we would be buying it, unless I can cut or haul my own. It is nice to light the campfire do what you need and shut it off when your done.
My family loves the fact there isn't any smoke and their clothes did not smell like a campfire. Also we have a couple family members with bad allergies and the Campfire in a can does not bother their allergies like a campfire does.
The only negatives I can think of are the Campfire in a can puts out a little bit of soot which is a little messy when packing up and the grill is a little on the small side. Neither are deal breakers and you probably would have the same issues with any propane campfire. The grill is adequate to cook on for and average family but if you had a large group you might want to bring an additional cooking option.
After much research, I ended up with the Camp Fire in a Can product because of the customer reviews of the product and the frequent comments about the outstanding customer service of the company,
After a half dozen camping trips with the CFIAC, I'd agree with the reviews and the customer service aspect. Our first trip was to Pisgah NF in the Smoky Mountains of NC. It rained virtually the entire time and we had the only fire in the campground - under the awning of our camper. The next trip was to Frisco in Cape Hatteras NS where, for the first time in years of camping there, we were able to enjoy a fire while watching the surf from our site.
To be perfectly honest, you won't fool anyone into thinking the CFIAC is a 'real' campfire during the day - the footprint is just too small. But, in the evening, if you set it up inside the fire ring and crank it wide open it'll easily pass inspection from almost anywhere. I'm don't have an accurate figure for the propane usage (I use the same tank for cooking) but would guess a twenty pound tank with the fire at half to three quarter setting lasts 12-15 hours. It actually puts out a good bit of heat and at anything near full open, we had to move our chairs back a little. I'd say half open would be an adequate setting for us with temps in the sixties. Not really a negative, but you will need to carry a little whisk broom along to brush the soot off the log set after use.
The product is well made with high quality materials and workmanship. Having said that, I broke two of the clips that hold the lid to the base on our first outing - entirely my fault. I called CFIAC and was immediately connected to the owner. I explained what I'd done and he still shipped me replacement clips at no charge. They came in two days later and included both screws and rivets so that I could go either way with the repair. CUSTOMER SERVICE.
Highly recommend the product.
