Baltimore is lucky to have Jennifer Wallace walking its neighborhoods. Her sensitive eye catches and reflects both the micro and macro aspects of its' urban life "a world punctuated by robins and jackhammers". Not only does she use photography to document her wanderings but her wonderful poetic voice gently takes the reader along across rooftops, searching for underground rivers onto street corners through vacant lots to a street fair and bookstore café. As Jennifer becomes learned about her adopted city, we, also, are drawn into intimacy with it making the transition from "blue-green and ignorant" outsider to lover "In love because the city won't let up no matter how much rocking. In love with this city as if a surprise walked through the door wearing suspenders and red-striped pants."

Reading these poems feels like walking the streets of Baltimore with a favorite philosophical friend whose spin on reality is productive medicine for heartache and heavier existential longing. "I've arrived in Baltimore, blue-green and ignorant./ I watch my neighbors' dailiness, circling. Their reliable strangeness," writes Jennifer Wallace in one piece that I admire. Her crisp, confident poet's way of questioning and celebrating life's momentary mysteries makes me feel "answered" (in the moment) and, not a small thing, happily entertained. Highly recommended.

A portrait of the contemporary city, and the process of the alien city becoming home.--It's the investigation of that process that is the most striking part of the book for me. The lives of the city--human, animal, historical and imagined, the weather and seasons--become the right words in a "grammar etched in the mind's bone."

Wallace not only shares what she sees. She walks us through her heart, her spirit and her mind. Poignant. Visual. Deeply enriching.
