This is a great album. Brian Baker's guitar playing is simultaneously raw and polished, if you can picture that. It has raw energy, but he was very technically proficient. One thing, though, Dag Nasty was not a pure D.C. band as some have noted. Although it was produced by Ian MacKay and featured Brian Baker, both of Minor Threat, the king of D.C. hardcore in the 80's, another big influence on this album was the singer Dave Smalley. Smalley was from Boston and was formerly the front man for the early-80's Boston straight-edge band, D.Y.S. So, it's really the best of both of the top east-coast hardcore scenes of the 80's - D.C. and Boston (yes, although New York was the headquarters of punk in the U.S. in the 70's, the 80's hardcore scene was pretty dismal compared to Boston and D.C.). Anyway, this album represents a high point in the angst of hardcore before it was co-opted by corporate bands like Nirvana, but with a proficiency that makes earlier bands look lame (and also hard to listen to unless you were actually hearing them live.) The emotion in this album is simply amazing.

well this is one of the best punk albums of all time .from d.c.comes dagnasty a band that combines power and hooks.this is there first album and remastered to a sound that brings this awesome album much greatness .kind of like taking the pillows away of in front of the speakers and making it sound like i have ears again.so if ya never heard this before i would recommend this to anyone that is into what we call punk rock or emo.for one this is like one of the best punk rock bands ever and one of the first emo albums ever also.at the time this album was the [bomb] but now thats its remastered it is the [bomb] again.pure punk rock .ever one talks about this band so much but as far as i say if ya never get this album you are missing out really bad.also a bonus with this one is a couple of live tracks for there first gig .which you can hear the raw power live.a band that could play and say so well. so as far as I CAN SAY get it be happy and wait for the next album to come out remastered in a couple of weeks !!!!!!cant wait!!!!

L’anno passato (2020) ho “festeggiato, molto a modo mio”, i 10 anni di acquisti e recensioni qui su Amazon, scrivendo 10 recensioni per 10 album, uno per ogni anno. Anche quest’anno ho deciso di fare la stessa cosa, vado a “spulciare” tra i miei ordini degli anni passati dal 2010 al 2020 e scrivo le recensioni “mancanti” agli album acquistati. Questa è di un cd con ordine effettuato l’8 dicembre 2010, quando ero in pieno fermento hardcore e stavo approfondendo, e acquistando, i cd di band di “seconda fascia”. I Dag Nasty, infatti, si formano a Washington, dalle ceneri, anzi dalle braci ancora caldissime, dei seminali Minor Threat. È Brian Baker che tira su la band, e forte dell’esperienza già vissuta, si può affermare che i Dag Nasty siano tra le prime band emo-core, quando questa parola aveva un senso vero e non era una parolaccia. L’album che posseggo è stato pubblicato da Dischord (garanzia di cose ben fatte) nel 2002 e contiene oltre alle 10 canzoni originali altre 6 canzoni, due provenienti dalle registrazioni di questo album, ma precedentemente pubblicate da Selfless Record, mentre le quattro canzoni live (mai pubblicate prima) e sono state registrate durante un concerto a Pittsburg. Sono contento di dire che questo cd che ho comprato è la prima versione in formato digitale di quest’album, quelle precedenti sono tutti vinili o cassette. E sono ancora più orgoglioso di essere il primo recensore italiano dei Dag Nasty, piccolissima soddisfazione che non interesserà nessuno, ma pazienza. L’album scorre via come molto hardcore-punk di quegli anni ci ha abituato a sentire, anche se il “manico” di Brian Baker nell’uso della chitarra si sente abbastanza, ci sono anche dei piccoli e rapidissimi “solo” che strizzano l’occhio al “nemico” metal. Ma qui però troviamo le briciole di quella musica portata all’estrema bellezza dai Bad Religion (di cui Brian Baker fa parte, e si capisce anche perché). Sono tutte canzoni che superano i due minuti ma mai i tre, tanto per capire la velocità di esecuzione, che è buona, ma non al limite del parossismo. Anche la voce del “secondo”, ma più rappresentativo cantante, Dave Smalley, è gradevole e scandisce le rime in maniera efficace, creando anche delle situazioni che permettono il coro sotto il palco mentre si poga duro! Nel booklet del cd c’è un bel resoconto proprio a firma di Dave, dove racconta dell’incontro con Brian e del suo primo concerto con i Dag Nasty, proprio quello presente nelle 4 canzoni su quest’album. È simpatico leggere che era letteralmente terrorizzato prima di salire sul palco, e di come hanno registrato l’album con un “guro” come Don Zientara. Pregevole la registrazione del live, si sente davvero benissimo, mi viene da piangere a pensare a quei tempi in cui le cose si facevano per bene anche se con pochi mezzi. Bellissima testimonianza dall’alba del hardcore-punk americano. Buoni ascolti!
