Review
Thrillers and YA - two perfectly matched genres, and this is a perfect example. The two main characters are excellently written, each with a poignant back story and a fierce love for one another which can definitely be felt; they certainly bring the mystery they're investigating to life. I really felt part of this story, which isn't easily done, and I just thought it was fantastic all round - with a cracking twist too.
Goodreads Review
This book was a breath of fresh air!!
It is both a mystery and a romance all rolled up into one and the setting is Anchorage, Alaska!! What more could you want!!
The characters are well developed and funny, too! There is a good mix of ethnicities and sexual orientations among these high schoolers. These students are exactly like kids you would find in any high school. Lucas definitely draws on her school experiences when creating both the students and the school environment.
Lucas's writing style is sharp and crisp, never boring or repetitive.
I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading more from Lucas in the future!!

About the author

Frances Lucas earned her bachelor's degree in business education, with a minor in English literature, and a master's degree in business technology. She taught technology, animation, and filmmaking in Alaska for many years and cofounded the Black Bear Film Festival.
While facilitating an after-school book club, she discovered her passion for young adult mysteries and thrillers, particularly the works of Karen McManus, Kara Thomas, and Jessica Goodman. Frances writes similar YA mysteries from a lesbian perspective. CAN I TRUST HER? is the story of two high school juniors, Virginia and Katie, living in Anchorage, AK, who were 8th grade sweethearts and wannabe detectives until Katie was forced to move away under mysterious circumstances. When she comes back to Anchorage, she wants nothing to do with Virginia, who comes up with a plan to win her back by suggesting they investigate the "accidental" death of the school bully. Full of twists and turns and snappy dialogue, CAN I TRUST HER? is a romantic thriller for readers of all ages.

I suppose if you like neither mysteries nor romance, you might want to avoid this book. However, if you like anything in either of those categories, this is a book for you. Author Frances Lucas deftly weaves together the two categories into this first book of what I hope will be many. The mystery is great, with enough clues to keep you guessing yet also help you put it together. But I mostly appreciated the way Lucas brought high school in Anchorage to life. Like most real high schoolers, Virginia and Katie do not always make the best decisions, and they often display an inner dialogue that is at odds with what they choose to say. Unlike so many authors, Lucas embraces this reality, giving us characters who feel like real people. The choice of Anchorage as the setting was another I appreciated. The characters note as normal experiences I would one day love to have, such as the opportunity to go cross-country skiing in the afternoon, to see the northern lights, or to both go to school and leave school in the dark (ok, I’d rather see the midnight sun). My point is that Can I Trust Her is an entertaining read that, like its main characters, can’t be defined by just one category. And that is what makes it great.
Can I Trust Her? has relatively short chapters that toggle the POV between the two main characters Virginia and Katie. Also, the time period changes, yet the change does not confuse the reader. Lucas clearly delineates the setting and the switching POV. The structure of the novel allows the story to unfold effortlessly. Lucas is skilled at giving the reader enough clues and information to stay grounded in the plot (Sometimes chapter POV switches are cumbersome for me. I find myself having to go back and reread. I did not have to reread with this book. It is smooth!) I was also hooked from the first chapter and was delighted to have a good page-turner with characters I cared about.
I highly recommend this YA novel not only to young people but to grown adults of all ages and demographics. First, YA literature is not meant for young adults exclusively. Can I Trust Her? fits the criteria for YA, which appeals to a wide readership. Second, the queer characters and themes in the book will delight a queer audience but also speak to friends and family and teachers of LGBTQ+ people. So, basically, every demographic will benefit from reading this book.
I found Katie and her struggle to find out who she really is to be particularly interesting. Should she follow her heart and risk being an outcast for loving a girl or follow society's dictates by staying with a boy whose idea of romance is sending her photos of his "junk?" A gut-wrenching decision for a teenager and Lucas handles it with compassion and realism.
I thought the mystery was developed well and I was pleased by how the plot tied together at the end. I loved spending time with Katie, Virginia and their friends and family and i truly cared about what happened to them. I'm so excited that this is the first book in a trilogy. I am looking forward to reading the further adventures of this dynamic duo and their friends!
I would recommend this book to teenagers, parents and fans of light mysteries. I don't think you will be disappointed! In addition to a good story you will pick up lots of tidbits about life in Alaska.
