Editorial Reviews

Review

"Creepy, chilling, and lots of nasty fun! Max Brallier gives the pick-your-own-path format a devious and very adult twist."
—Jonathan Maberry, New York Times bestselling author of Rot & Ruin and The Dragon Factory

"Funny, smart and damned gruesome. Way too much fun." – David Moody, author of Hater

"A fun pastiche of B-movie zombie fantasy and interactive horror novel . . . A boy’s own adventure that breathes a little well-deserved juvenile humor into the apocalypse." -- Kirkus

"Brallier's book may just be the best thing to happen to literary zombies since Max Brooks." -- Jacksonville Florida Times Union

About the Author

Max Brallier is a writer for the wildly popular virtual world, Poptropica, where each month over eight million kids spend more than 11 million hours, much of it engaged in Brallier's industry-leading online quests that exploit a rapidly increasing demand for narrative storytelling from those with gaming literacy. He's also a humor writer, having published The All-Star Bathroom Sampler , Toilet Trivia, Reasons to Drink, and Reasons to Smoke. By day he works in the advertising and promotions department of a major book publisher, plotting his escape route for when the zombies come.

I can't remember that last time I came across something that has been as thoroughly entertaining and laugh out loud funny as this book. When I bought it I was expecting over the top action and vulgarity... which it has in spades... but it delivers it in a way that is imaginative, hilarious and undeniably original. The characters and dialogue are of a much higher caliber than you would expect from a "Zom-com" book and author Brallier's fast paced, to the point writing style keeps the energy high and the pages turning throughout.

All in all a FANTASTIC read. Whether you're a zombie fan or not you won't be able to help yourself from laughing and consequently loving all the situations that you wind up in. I don't know how $10 could entertain you more!

This was awesome! Although, I must confess that I am just way too neurotic for this type of book. Well if you're anything like me I'm sure you've always wondered whether or not you'd survive a zombie apocalypse. I know I have and I've always come to the same conclusion... NO! I'm too clumsy, too OCD and way too neurotic to survive. I admit it (bows head in shame). Well, this is the book that may just help you come to terms with whether or not you'd survive or become a brain muncher like most every one else.

You, the reader, are the main character in this book (although ladies, you are a male)... but whatevah. I digress. You realize that Manhattan has had a zombie outbreak and you need to get the heck out of Dodge... what do you do? Do you take the next subway train outta there? Catch a cab? Or go home and hideout? Oh yes, these are the types of questions you will be asked in order to move on to the next chapter in the story. You will face moral dilemmas, strategic decisions, become a hero or die a gruesome death. The outcome will be based on your decisions.

Thus my problem! I died in about every way you can think of! I'm too much of a girl... or a wuss. I tried to run away... a lot, and that never worked out. Needless to say, I became a brainless brain muncher or was blown up to smithereens a few times. But, I still enjoyed it! This was so fun. I loved how each choice you made took you down a different path with your very own ending... some hopeful, some deadly and others inspiring. It was definitely different from anything else I've ever read (I was never into those "Choose Your Own Adventure" books growing up). Full of laughs, loads of action and just the right amount of zombie gore. A treat for zombie lovers! I'll say it again... it was awesome!

Absolutely loved it, had bought it a few months ago and just got around to finish it. Might sound cliche, but it actually inspired me to write my own book for a post apocalyptic world. Amazing twists, amazing character, amazing book. For me, it was very easy to connect with the character, planning to buy his next book.

There are two major problems with this book. The first is the character isn't noble or very interesting. As a self-described ex-drunken college kid who is a slouch at work, he doesn't inspire anything in the reader. I'm not sure who the author is trying to identify him with, but it really can't be the person actually experiencing this story. Is it likely that kind of guy is going to be reading this book? There is really nothing about this character that suggests he'd live for more than a couple minutes in a zombie apocalypse.

The other problem is really that the book is very formulaic. The author throws a lot of fairly recent cultural references at the reader to build some sort of common ground, things like Seinfeld or Half Life or whatever, but after a while they just look like filler. The paths through the book appear to be intentionally short, so you won't find the one or two great, long stories like traditional which-way books had. Even when you are doing well, the reward is a short ending. The point appears to be to create 50 different short stories that you can experience, but none of them have the kind of drama that make you want to live longer.

The idea of a choose your own adventure book for adults is really quite novel, but this particular incarnation certainly isn't. Hopefully someone else will make a better attempt.

Ok, its one of those Chose your Own adveture books and its a great read.
I opened it up and starting reading/adventuring and the next thing I knew- 2 hours had gone by without a notice.
Good word art.visualization.
Its not your G rated, everyone going to make it Disney book. It real life, dilema with some tongue in cheek play. Even some choices if you went weasle route, the Author cold smacks you for being a douche!
Great fun! Even when you think you goign to make it, you might not!
It has all sorts of things:Bike gangs, art museums, love of your life, striper samurai (yes I said samurai stripper!), school kid dilemas, police swat, military, marine sniper and huge a$$ rifle!
Looking forward to reading with the team mates and making it a drinking game. Its that fun!
If you like Zombie books or fun this is a book to get!
My only 2 regrets are:
1) should had ordered a NEW copy (the used is fine but after reading it and luvin it, going to get another NEW copy for sure)
2) Should have bought this a long time ago, it's that good abook!
