In a time of moe, high schoolers, and student council presidents, it's refreshing to watch an anime that does not fall into those tropes. While it is not the deepest show ever, Canaan has some real world substance (allegorical, if you will), which again is refreshing to know that not all anime is made purely for entertainment purposes only. Just about all of the main characters start off flat but as the show progresses they become round (some more than others) and a couple even evolve into tragic characters. My favorite character is Yunyun, as I feel that she is the most human of character with the most human personality. Even though she was originally made to be the show's comedic relief her character evolved in such a way to where in the end she became one of its heroes.
All in all, if you're looking for an anime that will make you feel and (to an extent) make you think, then Canaan is definitely a show to check out. For an anime that probably didn't get much exposure when it came out, and for one that was based on an even more obscure visual novel, you can tell that a lot of hard work and effort went into making it.
The last two episodes of Canaan are some of the best scenes I have seen in any anime, both for its stylized action and heart-to-heart dialogue. Through all the smoke and gunfire, there are many themes that we as human beings can relate to deep down: wanting to be close to someone, but not in a way that becomes a burden; the guilt from the past that weigh one's heart down; struggling against guilt and not getting anywhere. Understanding simple truths and seeing things as they are.
I'm speaking rather ambiguously as I don't want to give the plot away, but Canaan's message is deep. Guilt and one's past are not dealt by reasoning, but through simple truths. One can be alive in real life and be dead in the heart. On the other hand, One can be dead in real life and be alive in another's heart. The closeness between two people is not dictated by physical proximity, but whether one is alive in another's heart.
I highly recommend Canaan for those who want to see an action-packed anime with themes that we can relate to in our own lives.
This anime has a killer opening and a killer ending. The middle part is up and down. Sometimes it drags, but then it will ick back up again. The plot is very well written. There are also lots of great characters on both sides. Cannan is kind of like a mix between Noir, Burst Angel, and The Third; if you can sort of picture that. It's really good. Tons of action, drama, and comedy. It's not for the young ones though. There is harsh language and almost a bit of nudity. To be honest with you, this was a 3 or 4 star series for me until the last episode or 2. It has a killer ending. I think that most mature anime fans will find this series pretty entertaining.
