The stories span the country and its history, starting with the Haida Gwaii islands of the Pacific, moving to the Viking's experiences in the east, onto the New Orleans connection with Canada, and later, the fascinating story of "Canada's School on Wheels". You'll find out about famous Canadians such as Lucy Maud Montgomery, author of the classic, Anne of Green Gables, Sir Frederick Grant Banting, who discovered insulin, the inspiring story of Terry Fox, and the heartbreaking experiences of the Dionne Quintuplets.
Mrs. Akins brings Canadian history to life through expert storytelling. Small nuances such as Canadian spellings make it that much more authentic. I also appreciate how she's woven the Christian message into her stories. Her book has brought excitement back into our read aloud time and has sparked my son's interest in Canada. Since he has more free time than me, he'll be finishing it on his own, and eventually hopes to contribute his own review here.
The author is clear that this is not an exhaustive resource, and encourages her readers to learn more on their own. I highly recommend O Canada! historical fiction narratives for a truly entertaining way of being introduced to Canadian history.
This was a historical collection of stories and interesting characters that the author truly brought to life. I enjoyed each section, having a wonderful time learning as I read along. I never knew any of this. Walked away with a lot of inspirational stories that will enrich lives. Thanks to the author for this terrific journey through Canada!
Karla Akins has a knack for making these stories come alive, for anchoring me in the setting and making me connect with these characters (some famous, some I didn't know about). I loved it! I wish I could have learned about history in this way. Much more interesting than a standard textbook, but full of key facts and fascinating details woven throughout. Highly recommend.
